Gators trip Vikings 11-9

 

LAKE WACCAMAW – The East Columbus Gators brought across a total of 10 runs in the fourth and fifth innings and then held off a seven-run sixth inning by the visiting West Columbus Vikings to pull out an 11-9 non-conference baseball victory Thursday night.

Austin Barnes was the winning pitcher while C.J. Ganus came on in the seventh inning to record the save.

Allen Bracey had three hits, including a double, and Caleb Andrews had two hits, including a double. Bracey and Andrews each drove in three runs for the Gators, whose season record stands at 11-8. It was the Gators’ second win of the season over the Viking squad.

Josh Coleman knocked two doubles for West Columbus, which closed its regular-season schedule with a 10-12 record.

Coach Karl Bracey’s East Columbus squad will play host to Waccamaw Conference opponent Pender tonight at 7 in the Gators’ Senior Night game. West Columbus will play Tuesday at South Columbus.

East Columbus holds the Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference’s top 1A seed in the upcoming state playoffs. The Gators will step into state 1A playoff action Friday with a first-round home game.

Coach Ricky Young’s West Columbus team, which holds the No. 2 1A seed in the Southeastern 1A-2A Conference, will also begin state playoff action on Friday at Topsail.
