BURGAW - On Thursday morning, Pender High Senior Janetta Robinson was in Chapel Hill receiving the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Award as the state’s top female athlete for 2007-08.
On Thursday evening, Robinson hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Lady Patriots a 7-6 Waccamaw Conference softball victory over the visiting Whiteville Lady Wolfpack.
Whiteville had defeated Pender 4-3 in their earlier meeting for Pender’s only conference loss to date.
The Lady Wolfpack now has a 7-4 conference record and a 9-4 season mark. They will play host to South Brunswick tonight at 7 in Whiteville’s Senior Night game.
Pender holds a 10-1 conference record and will battle East Columbus (also 10-1) today at 4:30 in a showdown game for the conference companionship at Lake Waccamaw (see related story),
Whiteville, which held leads of 3-0 and 6-5 in Thursday’s game with Pender, was led at the plate by Ashae Covington, who had two hits, including a double and drove in four runs. Aubrey Evans also had two hits for the Lady Wolfpack while Kayla Batchelor and Elizabeth Williams each had a hit.
