History Question
What happened to the
community of Artesia that
was settled by immigrants?
Answer
Many the immigrants that established the community of Artesia, just east of Hallsboro along U.S. 74-76, were dissatisfied with prospects for their future, and moved away in 1907.
The colony was established by Hugh MacRae’s Wilmington company as one of several populated by people he imported from other states and countries.
Many of the colonists who moved there in the fall and winter of 1906 began to leave in the spring of 1907, according to a story in The News Reporter.
However, the newspaper noted a “number of Northern businessmen have visited the place and declared themselves as perfectly satisfied with the outlook.” One firm was to build a machine shop there, and a cucumber pickling business was to be established in 1908. A post office was to be established in 1907.
