Reverse 911
another level
of protection

The installation of the 911 system many years ago made Columbus County residents safer. A reverse 911 system in 2008 would make them still safer.

The Riegelwood tornado that killed eight people in November, 2006, is one reason why the supporters of the plan are bringing it to the county commissioners for approval. The tornado struck around dawn when most people were asleep. Many of the dead probably never knew what hit them.

A reverse 911 system would send phone calls out to everyone in the event of an emergency. A tornado warning would probably be the most likely scenario, but such a service would also be invaluable in the event of a major hurricane, for example. It could also be used in health emergencies, such as a pandemic, a train derailment or highway accident where evacuations are necessary – the list is a long one.

The N.C. Community Foundation feels so strongly about the idea that it’s willing to fund all or part of the costs for three years.

The county commissioners are correct to investigate which vendor will provide the best service, but the concept is solid and is in use around the state.

With advances in communications, it would be wise to take advantage of any tool that gives citizens the latest information during potentially life-threatening crises.
