WHITEVILLE -- Fred Eugene Tolley, 46, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at his residence. He was the son of Betty Bullock Tolley and the late John Thomas Tolley.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his mother, Betty B. Tolley of Whiteville; three brothers, Charles Tolley of Florida, Randy Tolley of Hallsboro, and Johnny Tolley of Whiteville.

RAYMOND ‘PAUL’ SETTLE
RONDA -- Raymond “Paul” Settle, age 80, of Little Elkin Church Road, passed away Friday, April 11, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem. Mr. Settle was born Aug. 26, 1927 in Surry County to William Henry Settle and Naomie Layell Settle.
Mr. Settle retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. in April 1991 after almost 46 years of service and was a member of Little Elkin Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Waddell and Hazel Byrd; and two brothers, Silas and Dwight Settle.
Paul was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Dixie Lee Settle of the home, his only son, Ronny Settle and wife Patricia of Whiteville; and two grandsons, Steven and David Settle who are in college in Greenville.
Other survivors include two brothers, Herbert Settle and wife Alma June of State Road and Joe Settle and wife Loraveen of King, three sisters, Hallie Wooten of Ronda, Mabel Bridges and husband Barnard of Sarasota, Fla., Annie Pearl and husband Holland Bauguess of Traphill; sisters-in-law, Susie and Mary Settle; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at Little Elkin Baptist Church with the Rev. Gwyn Anderson, a favorite pastor who stood by the family. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Caudill, Eric Colbert, Jamie Poteat, Dustin Billings, Daniel Billings and Nathan Roten. The family received friends Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

ROWLAND -- Austin Yates Williams, 15, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Wade Williams, and paternal grandparents, Amanda and Clyde Williams.
Austin loved all sports, he was a member of the football, baseball, cross country, and track teams at South Robeson High School. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever possible.
Final rites will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at South Robeson High School with the Reverends Kenny Mitchell, and Dennis Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Benson Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Rowland. Boles Funeral Home of Rowland is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his mother, Vicky Williams of the home; four brothers, Dustin G. Williams, Kavin A. Adams Jr., both of the home, Andrew Blair Williams and Allen Wade Williams Jr., both of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters, Amanda L. Williams and Alli B. Williams, both of the home; his maternal grandparents, Louise and Robert Barton of Rowland, his paternal grandparents, Diane and Ricky Hunt of Lumberton; and a host of relatives and friends.

BLADENBORO -- Joyce Carter, 101, died Saturday, April 12, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, Dock Carter; a son, George Carter; a sister and five brothers.

JOBE COY METTS JR.
KELLY -- Jobe Coy Metts Jr., 81, passed from this earth to his eternal home on Saturday, April 12, 2008. He was born Aug. 11, 1926 in Jones County, the second child of Jobe Coy and Alice Haskins Metts.
Metts lived in Jones County until the age of seven, when his family moved to Richlands where his father owned a farm and served as Justice of the Peace. During Jobe’s youth he became known to his friends and family as Snipe and is still called that name by many today.
He graduated from Richlands High School ins 1944 and later that year joined the United States Navy as Seaman First Class. He saw combat in the Philippines, the Carolinas Islands and was one of the first troops to land on Okinawa. He served aboard the USS Tyrell and later on the USS Tarawa aircraft carrier.
On Aug. 8 while aboard the Tarawa Jobe witnessed the signing of the Japanese Surrender on the USS Missouri. Upon returning home in 1946, Jobe entered Atlantic Christian College in Wilson. After majoring in math and science, he accepted a position in 1952 as teacher at Atkinson High School.
While teaching, he also coached the men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams and took the women’s team to the Pender County Championship. In December of 1952 Jobe and Frances Kelly married and settled in Kelly. In 1956 Jobe attended Duke University on a Math Fellowship. After teaching for 14 years, Jobe began a career in forestry that spanned 29 years. In 1994 he retired as vice president of Squires Timber Company.
Jobe was a man of great faith who served his Lord, family, country and community unceasingly. He excelled as a teacher, treasured his students and instilled in them the importance of higher education.
He was a faithful member of Centerville Baptist Church where he served the church in many capacities including being church treasurer for 40 years.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Centerville Baptist Church with the Reverends Paul Berry, Norman Wheeler and Jack Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home of Burgaw is handling the arrangements.
Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Frances Kelly Metts of the home; daughters, Sharon Metts Hall and husband, Robert of Wilmington and Kim Metts Beal of Charlotte; a son, Dr. Jobe C. Metts III and wife, Dr. Peggy Metts of Wilson; grandchildren, Kevin and Kelly Hall, Carrington, McGuire, Cabell and Mattie Metts; and a sister, Nancy Metts of Onslow County.
Jobe was preceded in death by an infant son; and brothers, James Ray, Rodney and Harold Metts.

DELCO -- Corbett Lee “Buster” Garrell, 73, died Sunday, April 13, 2008. He was born July 18, 1934 in Columbus County, the son of the late Henry and Allie Sellers Garrell. He was a commercial hunting guide, farmer and avid fisherman.

DUNN -- Pauline Soles, 90, formerly of Whiteville, died Friday, April 11, 2008. She was born Aug. 1, 1917 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Simon Calton Soles and Nettie Carroll Soles.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Dunn and formerly Shiloh United Methodist Church in the Lee’s Lake community. She was a 1934 graduate of Whiteville High School.

She was first married to the late William James Casey and then to the late William Faber (Bill) Smith. She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church of Glenn Springs and the Episcopal Women of the Church.

Williamson was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Graveside services were held Saturday, April 5, at Restwell #2 Cemetery in Bolton. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his parents, Shalania Jenkins and Scottie Eison Waddell; grandparents, Rose Gresham, Leanard Gresham, Phyllistine Jenkins and Tracy Waddell.
VIRGINIA BAILEY HARRIS
CHADBOURN -- Virginia Bailey Harris, 86, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Clare Russell Bailey and Elizabeth Smith Bailey.
Harris was a member of Chadbourn Baptist Church and was a home agent for Pasquotank, Camden, Perquimans, and Chowan counties for four years.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Chadbourn Baptist Church with the Rev. Sean Roberds officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, C. Elwyn Harris of Chadbourn; three daughters, Carolyn H. Leeds of Jacksonville, Ellyn Harris of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Suzanne Harris of Chapel Hill; a son, Everett E. Harris of Bangalore, India; a sister, Myrtle-Edna Lasley of Charlotte; and a granddaughter.

ROBERT H. LONG SR.
JACKSONVILLE -- Robert H. Long Sr., 80, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Long was a minister licensed and ordained by the New Life Christian Center in Holly Ridge. He also hosted a radio program called The Way and was active with prison ministry. He worked for 19 years as distributor of Little Debbie Snack Cakes and was owner and operator of Long’s Produce of Jacksonville.
Final rites were held Sunday, April 6, at Jones Funeral Home Chapel of Jacksonville with Rev. Dean Perry and J.B. Sholar officiating. Burial followed at Sealawn Memorial Park of Hampstead. Jones Funeral Home of Jacksonville handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Laura “Kitty” Long of Jacksonville; two sons, Robert “Rocky” Long Jr. of Wilkesboro and Hugh “Huey” Ward Long of Newton; a daughter, Deborah Long Duncan of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; a brother, Elbert Long of Tabor City; two sisters, Faye Fowler of Fayetteville and Frances Jolly of Nichols, S.C.

JAMES ROY BUFFKIN
TABOR CITY -- James Roy Buffkin, 83, died Friday, April 4, 2008, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Hybert Boston Buffkin and Mattie Hammonds Buffkin.
Buffkin was a veteran of the United States Marie Corps having served in World War II.
Final rites were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Spivey Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Marie S. Buffkin of Tabor City; a daughter, Donna B. Rouse of Wilmington; a son, Steve Buffkin of Tabor City; a sister, Bunny Cannon of Conway, S.C.; two granddaughters and a great-grandson.

CHADBOURN -- Paula Jean Reichardt Benton, 41, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Worthington Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stuart Shumway officiating. Burial will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Terry D. Benton of the home; daughters, Ashley Andrews of Lake Waccamaw and Brooke Ward of Clarkton; a son, Zack Benton of the home; parents, Paul and Rosemary Reichardt of New Bloomington, Ohio; brothers, Tim Reichardt and Randy Reichardt, both of Marion, Ohio; sisters, Brenda Hitzeman of Bellfountaine, Ohio and Tina Hempy of Prospect, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
