Final rites were held Friday, Sept. 21, at Ingathering Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ #3 in Plymouth. Burial followed Saturday, Sept. 22, at Evergreen Community Cemetery, Evergreen.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald W. Swiatek; a son, Floyd Hampton; two brothers, Joseph Hampton and Gordon Hampton; and two granddaughters.

BETHEL -- Ruben Edwards, 70, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007. He was born in Columbus County on July 25, 1937 to the late Alton and Clyde Strickland Edwards.
Edwards was a retired service representative of Massey Ferguson. He was from Clarkton, where he was a member of Heritage Freewill Baptist Church in Bethel. He enjoyed fishing, music, working in woodcrafts and spending time with his grandchildren.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Heritage Freewill Baptist Church in Bethel with the Rev. Walter Sumerlin officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel City Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home of Williamston is handling the arrangements.

LORIS, S.C. -- Luzanne Livingston Cox, 79, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at her residence following an illness. Born May 23, 1928 in Wampee, S.C.; she was the daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Livingston and Blanche Viola Ward Livingston.
Cox was a longtime member of Beulah Baptist Church. When she was not farming or spending time with her family she enjoyed visiting and ministering to the shut-ins and elderly members of her community.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Hardwick Memorial Chapel with Pastor Andy Bass officiating. Burial will follow in Princeville Cemetery. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, William Pearl Cox of Loris; two daughters, Kay Coats and Frances Holmes, both of Loris; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Ellen Kathleen Benton, 64, formerly of Ash and Shallotte, died suddenly on Monday, Sept. 17, 2007. Born in Brunswick County on May 6, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Battie Hilburn and Minnie Simmons Evans. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hilburn and Robert “Bobby” Evans.
Benton was a past member of Myrtle Head Baptist Church, where she helped in several church functions as well as sang in the choir. She was a seamstress, and worked for many years for Columbus County Hospital and Dosher Memorial Hospital. She was devoted to her family; she cared for her mother for 20 years in her own home.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Myrtle Head Baptist Church with the Rev. William Chappell officiating. Burial will follow in the Evans Cemetery. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home of Supply is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Allison Benton of Shallotte, Trina B. Whiffen and husband Brook of Dothan, Ala.; their father, Gerald Wayne “Chick” Benton and three grandchildren, Carter, Ashton and Avery Whiffen.

Patrick was a deacon and member of Mt. Sinai Holiness Church. He was formerly employed with Huron Chemical in Delco, and Quality Thermoplastics in Bolton.

LORIS, S.C. -- Thelma Louise MacLean Woodward, 87, of the Mt. Vernon community, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at her home following an illness. Born Aug. 17, 1920 in Worcester, Mass., she was the duaghter of the late Charles Spurgeon MacLean and Rebecca Howard MacLean. She was the widow of Horace Windbourne Woodward.
Woodward was a retired nurse and a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

DILLON, S.C. -- Tommy Wayne Meares, 60, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at McLeod Medical Center. Born in Marion County, S.C. March 4, 1947, he was the son of the late A.C. Meares and Nettie Strickland Meares.
Meares was a member of Hamer Church of God, and was employed by Black’s Tire Service.

Turner was co-founder and former co-owner of Columbus Auto Auction in Whiteville.

Survivors include a son, Ollie Verson Dowless and wife, Mary from Waco, Texas; four grandchildren, Terrie Hankins, Anthony Dowless, Keith Dowless, and Mary Elizabeth Dowless; six great-grandchildren and a faithful sister-in-law and friend, Berta Lee Saunders.
Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
WILLIAM RUSSELL LAMM
COATS -- William Russell Lamm, 72, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Healthcare, Wilmington. He was born March 13, 1935 in Harnett County to the late Onnie G. and Mattie Denton Lamm. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Pope Lamm.
Lamm was owner and operator of W. Russell Lamm Construction Company, and had been in the construction business for more than 40 years. He attended the Coats Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Coats Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Mooney officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Rose & Graham Funeral Home of Benson is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include Lisa Lamm of Benson; two sons, Andy Lamm of Whiteville, and Jay Lamm of Coats; two sisters, Ann L. Beasley of Coats, and Doris L. Guy of Raleigh; a brother, Hobert Lamm of Fuquay-Varina; and seven grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 6-8 p.m. and other times at the home of Ann Beasley, 318 S. Carrie St. Coats.

EULA JANE LEWIS
TABOR CITY -- Eula Jane Lewis, 91, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, at Loris Hospital. Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Bithel Manassa Fowler and Martha Jane Bellamy Fowler. She was the widow of Marvin Lewis.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Inman Chapel with Dr. David Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, John Lewis of Green Sea, S.C., and Phil Lewis of Wendell; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
LINDA WILLIAMS SPIVEY
WHITEVILLE -- Linda Williams Spivey, 65, formerly of Tabor City, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007. She was born Sept. 25, 1941 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Ernest L. Williams and Kathyree Hooks Williams. She was the widow of J. Norman Spivey.
Spivey was formerly employed with Four Seasons Apparel in Tabor City.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with the Rev. Victor Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Greenwood of Conway, S.C., Jeanette Inman and Brenda Ward, both of Whiteville; a sister, Patricia Ann Nobles of Whiteville; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William David Williams, Ellis Williams, and Horace Devon Williams.
Visitation will be held Friday (tonight), Sept. 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

CLARENDON -- George W. Simmons, 58, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at his residence.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Bristol Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Lester Frink officiating. Burial will follow at Butler Cemetery, Dothan. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Katie Louise Simmons; six daughters, Teresa A. Simmons, Lola J. Simmons, Delicious Givins, all of Tabor City, Latoya A. Simmons of Loris, S.C., Elizabeth Parker of Whiteville, and Vanessa King of Longs, S.C.; two sons, Leon V. Simmons of Tabor City, and Nelson D. Simmons of Durham; four sisters, Carolyn M. Givins, Betty L. Hennegan, both of Tabor City, Rosa S. Anderson of Durham, and Mary A. Mitchell of Vicksburg, Miss.; three brothers, James E. Simmons, Bobby J. Simmons, and Marzella “Neil” Simmons, all of Tabor City.
Visitation will be held Friday (today) from noon until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
