ROSSIE JAMES HILBURN

CHADBOURN -- Rossie James Hilburn, 70, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007. He was the son of the late Steve and Lizzie McDuffie Hiilburn. He was a veteran who served in the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverends Sean Roberds and Brian Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Tyson Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Faye Tyson Hilburn of the home; a son, Rick G. Hilburn of Raleigh; two sisters, Alice Faye McPherson and Helen Boswell, both of Chadbourn.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

ALMA OPHELIA GRANGE
DAVIS

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Alma Ophelia Grange Davis, 82, formerly of Council, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Kitchen Branch Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Patrick McNair officiating. Burial will follow in Whites Creek Church Cemetery, Lisbon. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her children, Janice Davis of Wilmington, Katrina D. Virgil of Macon, Ga., Wanda D. Powell of Hampton, Va., and Debra D. Frank of Fayetteville; and a sister, Rosa Belle Williams of Hempstead Long Island, N.Y.

Viewing will be on Saturday, June 2 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday. There will be no viewing following the service.


JOE SUMPTER

WHITEVILLE -- Joe Sumpter Jr., 65, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital.

Final rites will be held at noon Friday, June 1, at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumpter Family Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Susie Vermel Sumpter; a daughter, Sharlean Sumpter of Raleigh; a son, Joseph Sumpter III of Cary; three sisters, Melba Lennon McSween of Philadelphia, Pa., Ethlene Sumpter of Lakehurst, N.J., and Annie Lee Robinson of Whiteville; a brother, Lloyd Edward Sumpter of Chadbourn.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Thursday, May 31 (today) from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9-10 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday from 11 a.m. until noon, and there will be no viewing after the service.

BETTY LOU SMITH BLANKS

WILMINGTON -- Betty Lou Smith Blanks, 53, formerly of Whiteville, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, 850 Harnett Street, Wilmington. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Community Cemetery. A courtesy of Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Survivors include her husband, Josh Blanks; a son, Alvin Blanks of the home; six sisters, Essie Stone of Cheverly, Md., Nellie Robinson of Foresthill, Md., Carrie Graham of Clarkton, Barbara Piggott of Chadbourn, Elouise Bright and Betty Jeffries, both of Whiteville; four brothers, James Smith of Colonial Beach, Va., Nathaniel Smith of Castle Hayne, James Russell Jeffries of Whiteville, and Willie Truman Jeffries of New York.

There will be a wake Sunday, June 3 from 7-8 p.m. at Adkins-Drain Funeral Home, South Eighth Street, Wilmington.

LEWIS HENRY BALDWIN

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Lewis Henry Baldwin, 83, formerly of Hallsboro, died Friday, May 25, 2007, at Union Memorial Hospital.

Final rites will be held at noon Saturday, June 2, at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church in Hallsboro. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Williams of Fayetteville; two sons, Donald Baldwin and Jeff Baldwin, both of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Marion Bryant of Hallsboro; a brother, James Baldwin of Baltimore, Md.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday, June 1, from noon until 8 p.m.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Marion Bryant, 887 Jockey Road in Hallsboro.

MELINDA B. BYNUM

ROCKY MOUNT -- Melinda Bryant Bynum, 53, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at her residence following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born Feb. 15, 1954 in Whiteville, grew up in Cary and graduated from N.C. State University. She taught science in Rocky Mount and later opened a children’s clothing store there.

A memorial service was held Friday, May 25, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Bergland officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Lynell Bynum; three sons, Zachary Bryant Bynum, Harry Alexander Bynum and Charles Lynell Bynum, all of the home; and her parents, Charles Douglas Bryant and Virginia Worthington Bryant of Stedman; and a brother, Charles Douglas Bryant Jr. of Cary.

CHADBOURN -- James Franklin “Buster” Benton, 78, died Wednesay, May 30, 2007, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation of Elizabethtown.

He was the son of the late Vallery James and Hettie Green Benton Sr. and was a veteran serving in the Navy and Air Force.

Final rites willbe held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverends Sean Roberds and Neill Smith officiating. burial will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

Survivors include brothers, Vallery James Benton Jr. of Cerro Gordo, Floyd Green Benton of Cerro Gordo, and Richard Earl Benton of Chadbourn; sisters, Rachel Elizabeth Dubay of Titusville, Fla., Doris Louise Riley of Garner, Betty Benton Hubbard of Sumter, S.C., and Sudie Benton Williamson of Chadbourn.

Vistation will be from 7-9 at the funeral Home Friday.

MAE BELLE WILSON SURLES

WHITEVILLE -- Mae Belle Wilson Surles, 92, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007. She was the widow of the late Clarence Surles and daughter of the late Dollie Wilson Surles. She was a member of Miship Springs United Methodist Church.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverends Robert Rattz, Jerry Spivey and Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Columbus Memorial Park in Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Martha Jones of Lake Waccamaw, and Patty Goens and Marjorie Walker, both of Whiteville; two sons, Clyde Surles and Sherman Surles, both of Whiteville; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

WHITEVILLE -- Jethro H. George of the Cedar Grove community, died on Monday, May 28, 2007, at Sunbridge of Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. John Troy officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Whiteville. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Moore George of the home; four sons, Alfonza George of Chadbourn, Christopher George of Whiteville, James Allen Mosley of Whiteville, and Anthony George of Fayetteville; four daughters, Selena Mae Wilson of Philadelphia, Pa., Patricia George Pittman of Fair Bluff, Linda Kay Register of Whiteville, and Fran P. Owens of Chadbourn; a brother, David Fuller George of Chadbourn; and a stepsister, Geneva Hall of Jersey City, N.J.

A wake will be held on Friday, June 1 from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Viewing will be on Friday, June 1 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

RUBY NORRIS CANADY
BODIFORD

SHALLOTTE --Ruby Norris Canady Bodiford, 78, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at her residence. She was the widow of Walter Canady and Welton “Bodie” Bodiford.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Inman Funeral Home Chapel in Tabor City with his grandson, Keith Wilson, and Pastor Wayne Turnage officiating. Burial will follow in the Myrtle Green Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita C. Wilson from Shallotte and Tammy C. Sellers of Tabor City; two sisters, Lula Long of Nakina, and Emma Ard of Thomasville; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a son, Junior Canady.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 31 (tonight) at the funeral home. Friends can reach the family at the home of Rita Wilson.

EUDELL GERALD

TABOR CITY -- Eudell Gerald, 74, died Friday, May 25, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites were held Wednesday, May 30, at Sandy Plain Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Ford officiating. Burial followed in the Flag Patch Cemetery, Loris, S.C. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Darcies Gerald; four daughters, Brenda Batten and Rachel Gore of Tabor City, Shelia Moody of Loris, S.C., and Alice Faye Gerald of Manhattan, N.Y.; three sons, Franklin Gerald, Dale Gerald, and Edward Gerald of Tabor City; two sisters, Emager Woodbury and Mary Margaret McCray of Wilmington; three brothers, Lee Earnest Gerald and Lourise Gerald of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Roscoe Gerald of Tabor City.
