OBITUARIES

CAROL COLTER MORGAN

WHITEVILLE -- Carol Colter Morgan, 69, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born Aug. 15, 1937 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Margaret Colter. Carol grew up in Nowata, Okla., graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BS Degree in Psychology. During her husband’s 20-year Army career, they lived mainly at military posts in the southeastern United States but had two years in Ethiopia and three in Alaska. She was always ready for the next adventure. While in Alaska she received the Lord Jesus as her Savior and has never been the same. The family moved to Whiteville in 1983.

Public speaking, teaching and creative writing led to many opportunities. She received two first place and one second place award from the Alaska Presswoman of America. She also received the PT Smith award for Literary Excellence. She was a contributor to The News Reporter. She retired from the mental health field where she has served as an instructor, as a coordinator of two group homes and finally as the ADVP Coordinator of Columbus Industries.

A vital member of Living Word Church in Chadbourn, she was also active in the Women’s Aglow and the Writers Group.

When the local National Guard first deployed to Iraq, Carol spoke to the wives and families offering support and practical suggestions. Having sent her husband to Vietnam three times gave her talk credibility. She also supported the Relay For Life by speaking to area groups.

Final rites will be conducted on Saturday, March 31 at 11 a.m. at Living Word Church with the Rev. Lester Holcomb and Rev. Willard McPherson officiating. Interment will be in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd H. Morgan, Major, USARET, and two sons, Daniel L. Morgan, Major, USAR, stationed in Germany and Jonathan (Jon) L. Morgan of Leland.

The family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2007 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines.

BILLY FRANKLIN PENNY

CAROLINA BEACH -- Billy F. Penny of Carolina Beach, died unexpectedly Monday, March 26, 2007 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

He was born to J. F. & Gladys Sellers Penny on Jan. 20, 1942 in Columbus County. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, J. Devon Penny of Columbus County and Jimmy S. Penny of Wilmington.

Penny had a very successful career in the automobile industry and was well known for his sales ability. He began his career in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Phil Tolkan Pontiac. Later in his career, he was in management with Jerry Porter Lincoln-Mercury and Neuwirth Motors in Wilmington. He took great pride in mentoring many individuals entering the automobile industry. Penny was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was well respected by many and often known for his unique sense of humor. Always a lot of fun, he will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held in Wilmington at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road at 3 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2007 with interment immediately following at Oleander Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Elbert Bradshaw, a long time friend of the family.

He is survived by his daughter, Melinda L. Stanton and husband, Kent of Wilmington and their three children; his brother John F. Penny and wife, Martha of Trinity and daughters, Robin and Tamara Wall of Thomasville. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren & great-grandchildren of Robin & Tamara.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel.

PERRY LOUGH

ELIZABETHTOWN – Perry Lough, 57, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

HERBERT ANTHONY NOBLES

WILMINGTON – Herbert Anthony Nobles, 78, of Wilmington and formerly of Chadbourn died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove, Wilmington.

He was the son of the late John Henry and Bertha Hinson Nobles and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant. He also retired from the N.C. Dept. of Transportation.

Final rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2007 at Grace Baptist Church in Wilmington with Rev. J.D. Herchenhahn and Rev. Alan Benson officiating.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held Saturday, March 31, at 2:30 p.m. at Columbus Memorial Park. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Iris Bullard Nobles of the home; sons, Paul W. Nobles of Wilmington, Larry S. Nobles of Carolina Beach, and Barren E. Nobles of Wilmington; daughter, Janette N. Cox of Carolina Beach; sisters, Gussie Bullard of Chadbourn and Opal Cliff of Chadbourn; brother Alpheus Nobles of Chadbourn; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 - 7 p.m. on Friday, March 30 and one hour prior to the service at Grace Baptist Church, 1401 N. College Road, Wilmington, N.C.

LETA PEARL WOODELL SELLERS

WHITEVILLE – Leta Pearl Woodell Sellers, 84, of Whiteville died Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Columbus Regional  Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Perty Tate Woodell and Sarah Susan Ward and was preceded in death by her husband;  Samuel Owens Sellers; one sister;  Curlie  Woodell Bradshaw, son-in-law;  Robert  Strickland and a  great-grandson, Codie Ryan Floyd. Sellers was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church for more than 40 years and she was a  proud  member of the Daughters of the Confederacy Bladen Stars Chapter.

Final rites were Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Smyrna Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry McKeithan and Rev. Ted Riedel officiating. Burial followed in the Smyrna Church Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include  three daughters; Bertha Rose S. Floyd, Frances S. Clifton and Bonnie S. Strickland, all of Whiteville; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 9 step great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and 8 step-great-great-grandchildren.

BILL DEAVER THOMPSON

BLADENBORO – Bill Deaver Thompson, 76, of Bladenboro died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at home. He served in the Army in the Korean War.
He was predeceased by his parents, Grover and Attie Thompson.

Graveside services were held Thursday, March 29, at Bullard Cemetery in Bladenboro. The Rev. Charlie Tatum officiated. Bladen Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Survivors are his wife, Carrie Bowen Thompson of the home; son, Billy Dale Thompson of Pleasant Garden; brother, Stanley Thompson of Leland; sisters, Lois Cheshire of Bladenboro, Golda Ray Moore of Kernersville and Faye Quick of Cheraw.

PHILLIP M. SMITH

WHITEVILLE – Phillip M. Smith, 65, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Final rites will be Friday, March 30, at 1 p.m. at Little Iron Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Tabor City with Rev. Paul Stevenson officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery in Tabor City. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors are a daughter, Cynthia McNeil Robinson of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Barrett Wayne Gause and Ray Von Gause, both of New York; eight sisters, Bernice Alderman of Whiteville, Christine King and Peggy McClain of Chadbourn, Nancy Thompson of Fair Bluff, Linda Ballard, Geraldine Jenkins, Verneva Martin and Rachel Dossie, all of Cerro Gordo; and a brother, Douglas Martin of Cerro Gordo.

Viewing will be at Peoples Funeral Home on Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will also be at the church Friday following the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Bernice Alderman, 75 Brick City Road in Whiteville.

SARAH BURNETT ROBERTS

WASHINGTON – Sarah Burnett Roberts, 81, formerly of Whiteville, died Monday, March 26, 2007, at Capital Hospice in Alexandria, Va. She was a homemaker.

Funeral rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2007, at St. Mark AME Zion Church in Whiteville. Interment will be in Restwell Cemetery #2 in Bolton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Surviving is a sister, Catherine Cogdell of Whiteville.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 31 from noon to 1 p.m. at the church.

JAMES ‘JIMMY’ RAYMOND BRYANT

TRENTON, N.J. – James “Jimmy” Raymond Bryant, 69, died Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Capital Health Systems at Mercer in Trenton.

He was born and educated in Hallsboro, N.C. After completing high school he served in the U.S. Army. He then moved to Trenton where he met his wife of 25 years and later moved to Burlington, N.J.

James retired from the Ann Klein (Forensic) Psychiatric Hospital in Trenton in 1997, where he was a Medical Security Guard. He was the son of the late James and Gussie Bryant and the oldest of 10 children.

Final rites were conducted Saturday, March 24, at Campbell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Keith A. Marshall officiating. Interment was in Ewing Cemetery, Scotch Road, Ewing Township, N.J. Campbell Funeral Chapel of Trenton handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Bryant of Burlington; one daughter, Lula Yvette Nock of Trenton; two grandchildren; six sisters, Bertha Mae Bryant, Sylvia Sexton and Meriam Thompson, all of Maryland, Linda Boone of Hallsboro, Flossie Christine Batts of Louisiana and Martha Hughes of Trenton; three brothers, Daniel Bryant of Canada and Bobby and Aaron Bryant, both of Hallsboro; and a host of other relatives.

WILLIAM AVENT MARKS

CHARLOTTE – William Avent Marks, 59, died March 27, 2007 at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born in Wilmington on April 17, 1947. He was the son of the late J.R. Marks, Sr. and Marion Harris Marks.

He attended Asheville School for Boys and Baltimore Institute for High School and graduated from Campbell University.

He was preceded in death by his wife Pamela Brandon Marks, and brother, Joseph Rufus Marks, Jr.

A graveside service will be held Friday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by one brother, Lemuel Harris Marks of Whiteville and a daughter, Mary Alane Marks of Marietta, Ga.

WILMA HUGHES

TAR HEEL – Wilma Hughes, 80, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Hospital. He was a teacher and coach at Tar Heel High School for 30 years. He continued to work as a volunteer coach with the girls athletic program from 1985 until his death. He also served in the South Pacific with the 82nd Airborne during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Burroughs and Henrietta Hughes.

Final rites were held Wednesday, March 28, at Tar Heel Baptist Church with Rev. Warren Hill and Rev. Tom Willoughby officiating. Interment followed in the Tar Heel Baptist Church Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home & Cremations of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Peggy Darnell Hughes; a son, Don Hughes of Vanceboro; daughters, Susan Hughes of Longwood and Debra Morgan of Linden; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Girls Athletic Department, West Bladen High School.

NELLIE SUE JACKSON RICHARDSON

CHADBOURN – Nellie Sue Jackson Richardson, 76 of Chadbourn died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Columbus Regional  Healthcare. She was the widow of Odell Richardson and the daughter of the late Cornelius and Nancy Belle Jackson.

Final rites will be held Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. James Howard Nobles and Rev. Dale Manning officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include  three daughters; Kathy Sue Richardson of Whiteville, Pamela R. Sellers of Chadbourn, and Shelia Ann Duncan of Chadbourn; three sons, Roger Odell Richardson and Richard Lee Richardson, both of Chadbourn, and Ronald Dale Richardson of Bladenboro; two brothers Dennis Jackson of Fuquay Varina and Stancil Jackson of Alaska; three sisters, Essie Cox of Bladenboro, Evelyn Byrd of Fayetteville and Nina Grimsley of Lumberton; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and threegreat-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7 - 9 p.m. Friday, March 30 at Worthington Funeral Home

CLAUDIA “LOUISE” FLEMING

WOODLEAF – Claudia “Louise” Fleming, 76, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Laurel of Salisbury. She was born April 29, 1930 in Rowan County the daughter of the late Robert Hall and Gwendlyn Bailey Fleming. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she graduated from Woodleaf High School and from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. and received her masters from Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va.

She served as a missionary with the Presbyterian USA in Africa for 23 years. She taught at Gospel Light Baptist School and substituted in the Rowan County Schools until her retirement. She served as church treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and elder. She was supportive of Wycliffe Associates and Child Evangelism Fellowship.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 18, 2007 at Unity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Nathanial Holliman officiating. Interment followed in the Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Summersett Funeral Home of Salisbury handled the arrangements.

Survivors include sisters, Nell Deaton of Troy, Jackie Fleming of Whiteville and Gwen Holliman of Woodleaf.

ELIZA ADDISON

WHITEVILLE – Eliza Addison, 99, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 1 p.m. at St. James AME Zion Church in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors are two daughters, Ethel Jackson and Odessa Addison of Whiteville; three sons, Paul Roseboro and Joe Louis Roseboro of Paterson, N.J. and Robert Roseboro of Calif.

Viewing will be at Peoples Funeral Home in Whiteville on Friday, March 30, from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 31 from noon to 1 p.m. and again following the service.

MARY ELLEN HINSON CHAPMAN

BOLTON – Mary Ellen Hinson Chapman, 69, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Health Care.

RUTH FOWLER HARRELSON

TABOR CITY – Ruth Fowler Harrelson, 86, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 in Loris Hospital. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Mack Daniel “McDee” Fowler and Izzie Adeline Fowler Fowler. She was the widow of Shelton Ambrose Harrelson.

Final rites will be held Thursday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at Inman Chapel with Dr. David Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include  a son, Alan Harrelson of Whiteville; a daughter, Linda Paul of Tabor City; a brother, Durwood Fowler of Tabor City; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

MARY CURTIS BALDWIN

LAKE WACCAMAW – Mary Curtis Baldwin, 69, died Monday, March 26, 2007 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

She was born Jan. 6, 1938 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Otto and Lois Creech Baldwin.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park by the Rev. Willie Allen. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Surviving her is a brother, Phil Baldwin of Hallsboro.
