WHITEVILLE -- Remelle Brown Hawks, 80, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Claude L. Brown and Norma H. Brown of Georgia.

Graveside services were held Monday (today), June 18, at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Kendell L. Cameron Jr. officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Ellis Leroy Hawks of Whiteville; a son, Jerry Hawks and wife Sue Hawks of Whiteville; a granddaughter, Hillary Hawks of Whiteville; a brother, Brunelle Brown and sister-in-law Gale Brown of Hull, Ga.

MINNIE SUGGS HESTER

LORIS, S.C. -- Minnie Suggs Hester, 83, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at Loris Hospital.

She was a member of Camp Swamp Methodist Church and a native of Horry County. She was the daughter of the late Zealous and Cathaleen Suggs and the widow of Curtis Hester. She was predeceased by a son, Ernest Hester.

Final rites were held Saturday, June 16, at Camp Swamp Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Elbert Hester; two grandchildren and one great-grand.

CHADBOURN -- Louise Gwendolyn Hamer Simpkins died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

FInal rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at First Missionary Baptist Church of Chadbourn with the Rev. Lionel Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Community Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana E. McDuffie of Evergreen, Wanda G. McDuffie of Chadbourn; six brothers, Dudley Hamer and Dolroe Hamer, both of Chadbourn, Weldon Hamer of Waverly, Texas, Edward Hamer of New York, and Alton Hamer of Burgaw, Leon Hamer of Florida; a sister, Audrey Hawkins of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held Tuesday, June 19 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. There will be no viewing following the service.

NAKINA -- James Fay Williams, CSGM USA RET, 78, died Sunday, June 17, 2007. He was born Sept. 11, 1928 in Clarksville, Tenn. the son of the late Roy and Jessie Harness Williams.

He was the widower of Nollor Russ Williams.
Williams served in the Special Forces and as a paratrooper in Vietnam having earned a purple heart, bronze and silver star as well as other commendations. He helped establish ROTC in three schools in Brunswick County and also retired with the Brunswick County School System.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines, Whiteville.

Survivors include three sons, Tim Williams of Nakina, Kenneth Williams of San Antanio, Texas and Jimmy Williams of Suffolk, Va.; a daughter, LaRue Williams Vaughan of Franklin, Va.; two sisters, Maurine Singleton of Dickson, Tenn. and Lavelle Chase of Clarksville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

CLARKTON -- Albert Lee Graham, 70, died Monday, June 11, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

WILLOUGHBY

CERRO GORDO -- William Clinton “WC” Willoughby, 84, formerly of Evergreen, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at his residence. He was the son of late Paul and Lucy Kinlaw Willoughby Sr. and the husband of the late Anna Marcinsky Willoughby.

Willougby was a veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the USS Herbert in the Atlantic Theater during World War II.
Final rites were held Saturday, June 15, at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard W. Fowler and Lee McDonald officiating. Burial followed in Columbus Memorial Park, Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

RIEGELWOOD -- Daniel T. Roberson, 19, of the East Arcadia community, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital.

TABOR CITY -- Leatta Weaver Stevens, 108, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Henrietta Weaver.

Final rites were held Sunday, June 17, at Little Iron Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Stevenson officiating. Burial followed in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery in Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter Shirley Chatman of Hamden, Conn.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

GREEN SEA, S.C.--Burnis Leon “Tinker” Benton, 60, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at Loris Hospital. He was the son of the late Harry Clifton and Malsey Elizabeth HicKman Benton.

WHITEVILLE -- Ollie Mae Lee, 89, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born Oct. 18, 1917 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Jesse and Victoria Batten Dew.

Final rites were held Monday (today), June 18, at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with Rev. Slade Skipper officiating. Burial followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church Mausoleum. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Vernon F. Lee of Whiteville; six daughters, Gracie Lee White, Gladys Lee McDowell, Betty Lee Bordeaux, Estelle Lee Sellers, and Evelyn Lee Sellers, all of Whiteville; Jeanette Lee Mims of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Audrey Dew of Whiteville and Ellison Dew of High Point; 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Erma Lee Smith; four sisters, Cordie Shipman, Edell Haley, Thelma Lee, and Pearl Ahrens; and three brothers, Tommy Dew, Howard Dew, and Avery Dew.

WHITEVILLE -- Mary Horne Ward, 78, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late William Tallie and Martha Lena Avant Horne.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah L. Watson of Sunset Beach; two sons, Dennis Watson of Randleman, and Tim Watson of Whitsett; a brother, Cecil W. Watson of Anderson, Ind.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.
