OBITUARIES


         

AGNES IRENE MILLS
LITTLE

DELCO -- Agnes Irene Mills Little, 85, went home to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Premier Living, surrounded by her family. She was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Columbus County the daughter of the late David and Missouri Applewhite Mills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Clyde C. Little in 1971. She was also preceded in death by two infant sons and a sister, the late Louise Mills Stone. Agnes was a life time member of Red Hill Pentecostal Church, which was her life. She played the piano and guitar. She was church secretary for many years. She was like a captain of a ship. Agnes went back to school and graduated from Acme Delco High School when she was 70 years old. She also sold Avon for many years. She was very active with Ransom Activity Center.

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 25, at Red Hill Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Calvin Malpass and grandson, Jackie Squires officiating. Burial followed in the Ellis Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Benny Little and wife, Alberta of Delco; seven daughters, Arrie Garrell and husband, Buster, and Daisy Stevens, all of Delco, Carolyn Baker and husband, Cleveland, Hilda Bennett and husband, Fred, all of Bolton, Faye Squires and husband, Buddy, Frances Squires and husband, Alfred Ray, Geneva Ward and husband M.P., all of Kelly; two sisters, Elizabeth Chamber and husband, Ray of Delco, Doris Gooden and husband, Marvin of Kinston; two brothers, James David Mills and wife, Elonora of Maco, Bobby Ray Mills and wife, Pearl of Bolton. She was blessed with 21 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jackie, Brian, and Danny Squires, Lee Powell, Eddie Jacobs, Scott Farmer, Carlos Bullard II, and Stan Grice.

We have been blessed with a very good mother, grandmother and friend. We want to thank our many friends and family that have helped us through our sad time. We also want to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice for all the loving care they showed our mother, with special thanks to Jackie, Dot, Carey and Kathryn.

WILLIAM ‘BILLY’ JASPER
STOCKS

WHITEVILLE -- William “Billy” Jasper Stocks, 70, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born April 19, 1937, in Columbus County, the son of the late Jasper Enos Stocks and Lucy Roger Stocks. He was a retired carpenter and farmer. He formerly served in the National Guard.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, graveside at the Stocks Family Cemetery by J.H. Kelly. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Lynn Stocks Andrews of Mobile, Ala., and Maria Stocks Hammonds of Nakina; a son, Billy Wayne Stocks of Longwood; a brother, Enos Gayle Stocks of Delco; four sisters, Barbara Ann Duncan of Tabor City, Peggy Kelly of Wilmington, Shelby Evans of Delco, and Brenda Buffkin of Lumberton; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Doris Pritchard, Hazel Stocks and Neresa Stocks; and a brother, James Oscar Stocks.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 27, at the funeral home.

ANNE BOICE LATTAY

THOMASVILLE, Ga.-- Anne Boice Lattay, 87, formerly of Lake Waccamaw, died Monday, July 23, 2007, at the Golden Living Center in Thomasville, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur Malcolm Boice Sr. and Sue Thackston Boice. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Boyd Lattay Sr. and a brother, Wilbur Malcolm Boice Jr.

Lattay was born in Pender County and was a former member of the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 27, at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw with the Rev. David Walker officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, James Boyd Lattay Jr. of Thomasville, Ga.; a daughter, Miriam Chandler Lattay Troxler of Broadway; a sister, Sara Boice Drath of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

Vistation will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday (tonight), July 26, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church or the Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw.

CHARLES RICHARD
McCORMICK

CHADBOURN -- Charles Richard McCormick, 78, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, Wilmington. He was the son of the late Pete and Eula Mae McLaughlin
McCormick and
the husband of the late Ruby Ramey McCormick.

McCormick was a veteran serving in the United States Army and for many years he operated McCormick’s Shoe Shop in Chadbourn.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Chadbourn Baptist Church with the Rev. Sean Roberds officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He was survived by three grandchildren, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and one great-grandchild of Columbus, Ga.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at the funeral home.

LEROY ‘BUNKY’ PHILLIPS

FAYETTEVILLE -- Leroy “Bunky” Phillips, 62, formerly of Lake Waccamaw, died Saturday, July 21, at Glen Care of Warsaw.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Little Wheel of Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Lake Waccamaw with Rev. James Fullwood and Prophet Carlos Shipman officiating. Burial will follow in Cutler Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy Phillips; his children, Seymour Ford of Charlotte, Dexter Phillips and Ann Phillips, both of Clarkton, Magdalene P. Fulks of Winston-Salem, and Junior Phillips of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Lorene Stevens of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Louise Phillips of Hallsboro; three brothers, Harry James Phillips of Hallsboro, Franklin Phillips of Fayetteville, and Edward Phillips of Lake Waccamaw.

Viewing will be held Thursday (today), July 26 from noon until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and from noon until the time of service at the church.

LYDIA TOMPKINS
PRIDGEN

REELSBORO -- Lydia Tompkins Pridgen, 80, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Craven Regional Medical Center.

Final rites were held Tuesday, July 24, at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Lee Toler and Kirby Spence officiating. Burial follow in the New Bern Memorial Cemetery. Bryant Funeral Home of Bayboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, John Pridgen; four daughters, Carroll Korney of Bayboro, Frances Hill of Whiteville, Faye Marie Fenner of Reelsboro, and Beverly Terry of Merritt; a brother, T.B. Tompkins of Hobucken; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pamlico County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 302, Bayboro, N.C. 28515.

MAGGIE LOUISE
BALDWIN

WHITEVILLE -- Maggie Louise Baldwin, 68, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Welches Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Welches Creek Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela Kirk of Lumberton and Roberta Lewis of Bridgeport, Conn.; a son, Timothy Baldwin of the home; a sister, Flora Baldwin of the home; four brothers, Thomas Baldwin and Chester Baldwin of Whiteville, James Baldwin of Loris, S.C. and Eddie Baldwin of Philadelphia, Pa.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Thursday (today), July 26 from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Friday from 1-2 p.m. and again following the service.

LETTIE MAE HILL

LUMBERTON -- Lettie Mae Hill, 101, formerly of Whiteville, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Woodhaven Nursing Home.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Timothy Moss officiating. Burial will follow in the Grissett Cemetery in Shallotte. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Oleta York and Lavonia York, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; four sons, Glendale York of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Prentice York of Miami, Fla., Bobby Smith of Clarkton, and Billy Coleman of Nakina.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday (today) from 7-8 p.m. Viewing will be at the funeral home Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until time for the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Coleman, 310 Charlie Stanley Road in Nakina.

RUTH POWERS NOBLES

CERRO GORDO -- Ruth Powers Nobles, 87, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Wesley and Mary Vance Coleman Powers and the widow of Jesse Wilson Nobles.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Worthington Funeral Home with the Reverends Charles Dudley and Randy Ghent officiating. Burial will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Faye Ward of High Point, and Betty Jean “BJ” Batton of the home; a son, Harold Wayne Nobles Sr. of Chadbourn; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
