OBITUARIES

WESLEY CARL BATTEN

WHITEVILLE -- Wesley Carl Batten, 81, died Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late John Wesley Batten and Fannie Worrell Batten.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Graham Batten, William Batten, John Curtis Batten and Lloyd Batten; three sisters, Nellie Batten, Retha Batten Carey and Thelma Batten; mother and father-in-law, M.E. and Ruth Ellis of Whiteville.

Batten was a member of First Baptist Church in Whiteville. He was a former banker with Southern National Bank. For the past 43 years he was owner and operator of Ellis’ Ladies Shop and Lisa’s Bootery in Lumberton. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.

Final rites will be held Monday, April 9 (today) at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Kendell Cameron Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Columbus Memorial Park, Whiteville. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Survivorsninclude his wife, Lois Ellis Batten; a daughter, Lisa Batten Kunkleman; a son, Michael Carl Batten; son-in-law, Dan Kunkleman, daughter-in-law, Jeannette Batten; eight grandchildren, Joanna Batten, Michael Batten, Jillian Ashley, Taylor Ashley, Danielle Kunkleman, Joe Kunkleman, Sarah Kunkleman, Sam Kunkleman; brother, Paul Batten of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Thetis Batten Sessions of Whiteville and Lois Batten Blakely of Greensboro; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and First Baptist Church, Whiteville.

JOSEPHINE McCLENEY WOOTEN

WHITEVILLE -- Josephine McCleney Wooten, 81, died Thursday, April 5, 2007, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Dennis Gray McCleney and Effie Pier McCleney. She was preceded by her husband, Robert M. Wooten Jr.

Wooten was a member of Western Prong Baptist Church in Whiteville and the first lady deacon of Western Prong. She was a member of the Woman’s Missionary Union and served as church clerk for 40 years.

FInal rites were held Saturday, April 7, at Western Prong Baptist Church with Rev. Warren Hill officiating. Burial followed in Western Prong Church Cemetery. Mckenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane Gray Coe of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Leslie Coe and Laura Coe Schade; three sisters, Jackie Lennon of Evergreen, Mollie Shaw and Rachel Nance, both of Chadbourn.

VIOLET GLEE NORRIS
CREECH

TABOR CITY -- Violet Glee Norris Creech, 57, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, at her residence. She was the widow of McArthur “Mack” Creech and the daughter of the late Jasper Dewey and Retha Glee Fowler Norris.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 9 (today), at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie Jackie Godwin officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Creech Family Cemetery, Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Suzette Yolanda Creech of the home; four brothers, Havie Norris of Thomasville, Ed Norris of Jacksonville, Fla., Don Norris of Thoamsville, and Ronald Norris of Jacksonville, Fla.

RUTH STRICKLAND
ROBERTS

WHITEVILLE -- Ruth Strickland Roberts, 80, died Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late Jim Strickland and Dovie Connor Strickland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Roberts and son, Gene Roberts.
Roberts was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Whiteville.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 7, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Bailey officiating. Burial followed in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Alan Roberts of Whiteville; a daughter, Joan Young of Whiteville; two sisters, Gertrude Elliott of Cerro Gordo, and Alene S. Skovgard of California; and four brothers, O.B. Strickland of Cerro Gordo, Dewey Strickland of Chadbourn, Cleveland Strickland of Canada, and Billy Strickland of Evergreen.

ERNEST RAY HAYES

CERRO GORDO -- Ernest Ray Hayes, 50, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was the son of the late Julius Manley “Buddy” Hayes.

Final rites were held Friday, April 6, at Worthingron Funeral Home with Reverends Thomas Fairfax and Chip Hannah officiating. Burial followed in Hayes Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Allene Soles Martin of Chadbourn; a sister, Martha Faye Barnhill of Whiteville; two brothers, Franklin “Tom” Hayes of Evergreen and Julius Francis “Joe” Hayes of Whiteville.

LULA MAE CALLENS

WHITEVILLE -- Lula Mae Callens, 64, died Friday, April 6, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

ROBERT MAURICE DUNN

CHADBOURN -- Robert Maurice Dunn, 19, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 7, at Pink Hill Funeral Home. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Pink Hill Funeral Home of Pink Hill handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Tonya McLaurin Dunn of Goldsboro; his grandfather, Maurice McLaurin of Chadbourn; his sister, Jessica Lynn Dunn of Goldsboro; and his brother, Randall Dunn Jr. of Chadbourn.

OSCAR WADE AVANT

SUMTER, S.C. -- Oscar Wade Avant, 75, died March 17, 2007, at Toumey Regional Medical Center.

A native of Florence, S.C. he graduated from Presbyterian College and received his master of public health from Yale University School of Medicine. He was the owner of many nursing homes, and was president of Century Care Center and Shoreland Health Care and Retirement Center of Whiteville. He had also served as administrator and in other capacities of hospitals.

Survivors include his wife, Susie Avant; three sons, Keith Avant of North Carolina, Thad Avant of Florida, and Scott White of Georgia; a daughter, Gwen Harbour of Sumter, S.C.; and eight grandchildren.

GENERAL ‘BILL’
JOHNSON JR.

WHITEVILLE -- General “Bill” Johnson Jr., 56, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at his residence.

Final rites were held Sunday, April 7, at Brunswick Waccamaw Baptist Association, Whiteville with Bishop Rudolph Powell officiating. Burial followed in Spring Hill Cemetery, Whiteville. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Abdul S. Johnson of Charlotte; a brother, Edgar Monroe Johnson; four sisters, Earlene Johnson Page, Shirley A. Johnson, Lolly J. Stanley, and Ruby E. Johnson; and a grandchild.

WILLIAM LLOYD HAYES

WHITEVILLE -- William Lloyd Hayes, 50, died Friday, April 6, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare. He was the son of the late Pershon Alonzo and Rosa Lee Crawford Hayes.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Blackman Cemetery near Old Dock with Rev. Bill McNeil officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a sister, Sherry A. Cox of Orrum; three brothers, Ricky Hayes of Supply, Johnny Hayes of Lumberton, and Danny Hayes of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at the funeral home.

SAMMY K. FIELDS

EVERGREEN -- Sammy K. Fields, 64, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was the son of the late Kinnon and Ruth Ward Fields.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

Survivors include a sister, Marthella Fields Moore of Evergreen; and a brother, Jiggs Fields of Evergreen.

WYGENIA BULLOCK ELLIS

WILMINGTON -- Wygenia Bullock Ellis, 62, formerly of Fair Bluff, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Cypress Point Rehabilitation Center.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 7, at S&L Funeral Home Chapel, Fair Bluff with the Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Hickolry Grove Church Cemetery, Fair Bluff. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, George Ellis Sr. of Wilmington; a daughter, Antoinette Leshalle Ellis of Wilmington; five sons, George Ellis Jr., Kelvin Ellis, Michael Ellis and Dwight Bullock, all of Wilmington, and Albert Ellis of Candor; five sisters, Diantha Eady, Mildred Vereen, and Frosty Davis, all of Fair Bluff, Ann Bullock of Atlanta, Ga.; and Jeri Carrucci of Greensboro; three brothers, Ellis Grant of Albany, Ga.; B.J. Vereen of Cerro Gordo, and Claude Vereen Jr. of Fair Bluff; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchldren.

HAROLD J. ‘RUSTY’
NEALEY

CHADBOURN -- Harold J. “Rusty” Nealey, 59, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, in Fayetteville. He was the son of the late Carson and Lillie Mae Long Nealey and was a United States Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War.

A memorial service was held Friday, April 6, at Worthington Funeral Home with Chaplain Richard DePriter officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Troy J. Nealey and Jason J. Nealey, both of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Louise Silva of Coast Rica and Margie N. Doan of Chadbourn; four brothers, Thomas Elroy “Bill” Nealey of Sumter, S.C., Joe B. Nealey of Garden City, S.C., Jerry Nealey of Monroe, and Guaran Lee “Tony” Nealey of Chadbourn; and a grandchild.
