TABOR CITY -- Retha Cox Stevens, precious and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 83, died early Saturday morning, April 28, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital following an illness. Born June 30, 1923, in Tabor City, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Marshall Cox, and the late Tempie Norris Cox.
Stevens devoted her life to serving the Lord, tending her family, caring for others, seeking always to make a difference for good in the world. She was actively involved in volunteer work, donating her time with both charitable and support oriented organizations. Some of her accomplishments include: Heart Fund Chairperson for Columbus County, first woman chairperson in the history of the Board of Elections in Columbus County, past president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Tabor City Chapter, Founder and President of the Seaside Support League for MIA/POW’s and their families. Stevens was a major fund raiser and designer for the Veterans Memorial in Tabor City, and a one time a member of the Sweet Adelines. She was also a homemaker, an avid gardener, and longtime member of the Tabor City Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Hardwick Memorial Chapel with Pastor David Coleman officiating. Committal services followed at Twin City Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Survivors include her husband, Elson Harding Stevens of Tabor City; a daughter, Diane Stevens Jones and husband Ferrell L. Jones Sr. of Tabor City; two grandsons, Ferrell L. Jones Jr. and wife Angie W. Jones and Brenden H. Jones and wife Angela C. Jones, all of Tabor City; four great-grandchildren, Ferrell L. “Trey” Jones III, Raegan L. Jones, Savannah-Grace Jones, and Ella Brynn Jones; and a sister, Edith Cox Soles and husband Euclid W. Soles of Tabor City; several nieces and nephews, family members and friends including a devoted nurse, Lisa Duncan.
Visitation will be held Monday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at Hardwick Funeral Home located at 4831 East Main Street, Loris, S.C.
LAKE WACCAMAW -- Annie S. Hickman, 85, died Friday, April 27, 2007. She was born Nov. 25, 1921 in Columbus County, the daughter of former Sheriff Herman D. Stanley and Matha Nobles Stanley. She was the widow of J.B. Hickman and was a member of First Baptist Church in Whiteville and taught children’s Sunday school for several years. She retired from Southern National Bank.
Final rites were held Sunday, April 29, 2007, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Kendall Cameron officiating. Interment followed in Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include James H. “Jimmy” Hickman and wife, Mary Beth of Maiden, Jo Ann Cox and husband, Johnny of Clarkton, Mary Ellen Kunza and husband, Ray of Hickory, William Richard “Yogi” Hickman and wife, Gail of Ocean Isle Beach and Charles Bryan “Hoss” Hickman and wife, Caroline Verrette of Lake Waccamaw; seven grandchildren, Jamie Hickman of Shallotte, Bryan Hickman of Winston-Salem, Cary Cox of St. Petersburg, Fla., Will, Brett and Sam Hickman of Ocean Isle Beach, and Josh Blackburn of Whiteville; three brothers, H.D. Stanley of Jacksonville, Fla., Shelton Stanley of Wilmington and Wayman Stanley of Ridgeway, S.C.; two sisters, Louise Britt of Newton and Betty Jo Smith of Plant City, Fla. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Al G. Stanley and Robert P. Stanley, and a sister, Helen Walters.

WHITEVILLE -- Helen Stanley Thompson, 74, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Wood Haven Nursing Facility, Lumberton. She was the daughter of the late Julian Stanley and Alice Jolly and was preceded in death by her husband, Gaither Thompson, She was a former member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Bruce Cannon officiating. Burial followed in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include her sons, Michael V. Thompson and wife Becky of Kenansville, J. Darren Thompson of Burlington; a brother, Robert Stanley of Whiteville; two sisters, Lillian S. Hunt and Julia S. Hardison, both of Florida; grandchildren, Laura T. Rich of Coats, and Kristen Thompson of Charlotte.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 1 from 6-6:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service at McKenzie Mortuary.
HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Helen Mae Thompson, formerly of Hallsboro, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Prospect Heights Hospice Center. She was the daughter of the late Robert Thompson.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Fairmont. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her mother, Eulah Thompson of Fairmont; two brothers, Donnell Thompson of Charlotte and Acie Thompson of Hackensack, N.J.; and a sister, Fannie Clopton of Fairmont.
Visitation will be at the church Tuesday, May 1 from 1-2 p.m.
WHITEVILLE -- Patsy Smith Munn, died Friday, 27, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Roland Munn; a son, Gary Smith of Whiteville; two stepsons, Sidney Munn of Columbus, Ohio and Roland Munn Jr. of Whiteville; a stepdaughter, Miriam Munn of Whiteville; four brothers, Edgar Smith, David Smith, Fred Smith, and George Smith, all of Whiteville; three sisters, Esther Gore, Clara Smith and Deloris Robinson, all of Whiteville; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 1 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
TABOR CITY -- Annie Laura Caines Gore, 93, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was the widow of Alva Dewey Gore. Born in Horry County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Zennas D. and Zemma Fowler Caines.
Final rites were held Saturday, April 29, at Old Zion Wesleyan Church with the Reverends Billy Ray and Mark Klass officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Royce Gore, Clifford Gore, and Leonard Gore, all of Tabor City; a daughter, Hilda Faye Gore Johnson of Loris, S.C.; a brother, Howell Elmer Caines of Tabor City; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
CHADBOURN -- Ophelia Carter Curry, 84, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Annie McCumbee Carter.
A graveside service was held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2007 at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Elmore Strickland officiating. Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Sarah H. Carter of Chadbourn.
NEWARK, N.J. -- Roger Graham Sr., 70, formerly of Riegelwood, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at Graham Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Ricky Graham officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Roger Graham Jr. and Darnell J. Graham; five grandchlidren, a great-grandchild, stepchildren; a sister, Edith Daniels of Riegelwood; a brother, Daniel L. Graham of Riegelwood.
Viewing will bel held on Monday (today) starting at noon.
There will be a wake on Monday (tonight) from 6-7 p.m. from Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville. Viewing will be one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church and following the service.
WHITEVILLE -- Miriam “Jackie” Grubbs, 61, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites were held Saturday, April 28, at St. Mark AME Zion Church with Rev. Erlinda Dobson. Burial followed in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Murphy of Chadbourn; two sons, Arthur Grubbs Jr. of the home and Michael Grubbs of Bethlehem, Pa.; her mother, Luminia Murphy of Hallsboro; two sisters, Andrea Bartow of Hallsboro and Josie Mae Ellis of Trenton, N.J.; two brothers, Fredrick Murphy of Hallsboro and Pastor Larry Johnson of Newark, N.J.
WHITEVILLE -- Lillie Mae “Met” George, 97, died Wednesday, April 24, 2007, at Liberty Commons.
Final rights were held Sunday, April 29, at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Flowers officiating. Burial followed in the Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Willie Gene George and Benjamin H. George, both of Whiteville.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie G. George, 1299 Sunset Terrace in Whiteville.
WHITEVILLE -- Milton C. Webb, 77, died Sunday, April 29, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
TABOR CITY -- Rachel Lee, 87, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Loris Extended Care Facility. She was the wife of the late Hector Boyd Lee, and the daughter of the late Jay Franklin Combs and Lila L. Page Combs.
Lee was a retired cafeteria manager in the Tabor City School System, and an owner/operator of the Todd House Restaurant in Tabor City.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Tabor City Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Visitation will be Monday (tonight) between the hours of 7-9 p.m. at the funferal home and 10 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the church.
TABOR CITY -- Olin David Buffkin, 68, died Sunday, April 29, 2007, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center, Wilmington. He was the son of the late William Tom Buffkin and Frostie Pridgen Buffkin.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery, Green Sea, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors by his wife, Beth Ann Nobles Buffkin and two brothers, Cleo Buffkin of Green Sea, S.C. and Defentrice “Dee” Buffkin of Tabor City.
