WHITEVILLE -- Earl C. Andrews, 88, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. Born in Brunswick County on June 11, 1918 he was a son of the late C.C. “Lum” and Ellen Somersett Andrews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Betty Andrews; a son, Leon Walker; brothers, Jim, Lee and Jule Andrews; and a sister, Mollie Ray.
Andrews retired from International Paper Company as a tug boat captain. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He was a member of Nakina VFW Post #6066 having served as Post Commander for 18 years and was also a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Committee and served on various civic and community committees throughout Columbus County.
Final rites were held Saturday, Oct. 7 at Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel officiated by the Rev. Oscar Hullender. Entombment followed in the Brunswick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Brunswick Funeral Service of Shallotte handled the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Linwood Andrews of Elkin, Chris Andrews of Ocean Isle Beach, and James Andrews of Moncks Corner, S.C.; a sister, Linnie Sasser of Whiteville; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
BOBBY WILLIAM SING
TABOR CITY Bobby William Sing, 61, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of the late William Gordon Sing and Mary Ellis Sing.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Austin Long Cemetery, Tabor City, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Smith. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Booth of the home; a son, William Gordon Biggs of Winter Haven, Fla.; two daughters, Lori Ann Biggs of Akron, Ohio, and Melissa K. Hodge of Creston, Ohio; a brother, Tommy Gordon Sing of Tabor City; a sister, Mildred Hancock of Whiteville; nine grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
JAMES ‘TOMMY’ EDWARD LONG
WHITEVILLE James “Tommy” Edward Long, 60, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 in Columbus Regional Health-care. He was born Oct. 2, 1946 in Columbus County, the son of the late Alton and Mabel Cumbee Long.
Long was formerly employed with Georgia-Pacific for 10 years. He was a member of Sand Ridge Hunting Club and Fish Pond Hunting Club. He was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 at Magnolia Baptist Church by the Reverends Olease Boyd and Leroy “Nick” Long. Interment will follow in the Long Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, James Alton Long and Glenn Anthony Long, both of Whiteville; and a brother, Steve Long of Whiteville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Alton Long and Richard Long; and two sisters, Kay Delana Long and Patricia “Patsy” Ann Long.
ALAN O’BERRY STEVENS
WHITEVILLE Alan O’Berry Stevens, 39, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006. He was born Sept. 8, 1967 in Columbus County, the son of Minnie Faye Carter Stevens and the late Homer L. Stevens.
He was employed with Dunes Development Partners of Little River, S.C.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends David Watts and Scott Smith. Interment will follow in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his mother, Minnie Faye Stevens of Whiteville; a brother, LeGrand Stevens of Holly Springs; and a sister, Nancy Reynolds of Whiteville.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the funeral home.

CLARKTON Mary Packer Starnes, 83, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006 at her residence. She was predeceased by husband, Joe Starnes, and a son, J.P. Starnes.

Survivors include four sons, Richard Starnes, Stevie Starnes, Reese Starnes, all of Clarkton, and Robert Starnes of Whiteville; four daughters, Peggy Butler of Bladenboro, Rosa Atkins, Norma McCall, Sue Coleman, all of Clarkton; a brother, Haywood Packer of Clarkton; two sisters, Hazel Hood of Clarkton, and Eva Mae Price of Bladenboro; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
