Where was
the apology?

The county commissioners Friday rescinded their vote to provide health insurance premiums to outgoing commission members in a special-called, business-hour session, but at no point was anything resembling a formal apology offered.

One needs to be given at tonight’s meeting.

Instead, Commissioner Amon McKenzie was defiant in a speech Friday before an angry crowd at the commissioners’ chambers, even telling the audience that he didn’t feel he had done anything bad. Wrong answer, Amon.
That means that at least McKenize and maybe the others who didn’t speak don’t realize the gravity of the crisis in confidence this issue has caused.

At a minimum, this was a profound error in judgment, but it appears to be a calculated effort to soak taxpayers for personal gain.

The least Columbus County taxpayers deserve is a unanimous, contrite apology from the board tonight.

This incident is one that won’t soon be forgotten, but the county must move on to other pressing matters. That can’t and won’t happen until the commissioners are forthcoming and honest about this “mistake” and ask for the forgiveness of those they are elected to serve.
