OBITUARIES
MARIE C. HEDRICK

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-- Marie C. Hedrick 87 died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 16, 1919, in Whiteville, a daughter of the late Austin Carl and Elizabeth Ward Coleman. Her son, William Kenneth Osborne and grandson, Ralph Osborne Jr., predeceased her.

Hedrick made her home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. since 1964. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Covenant Towers in Myrtle Beach, S.C. McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach, S.C. handled the arrangements for the family.

Surviving are her children, Mitchell J. Hedrick of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Sherry H. Caudle of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Ralph Osborne (Merry) of Bakersfield, Calif., a sister, Carrie Love Parker of Torrance, Calif., four grandchildren, Paul J. Caudle, Marty Osborne, Shelley Drose, and Robin Zachry.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 950-48th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.

MARGARET O’GORMAN GREGORY

HAYS, Kansas – Margaret O’Gorman Gregory, 43, formerly of Hallsboro, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, after a lengthy illness. She is a daughter of Hubert O’Gorman and Jeannette Bennett of Salina, Kansas.

A memorial service was held in her home state of Kansas on Thursday, Oct. 5 at Mount Ayr Friends Church.

Survivors include her husband, Art Gregory, daughters, Alicia O’Gorman, Lindsey Sewasky, and Lacey Gregory, stepsons, Bruce Auer and Jason Gregory, her mother and stepfather and her stepmother, siblings, Deborah O’Gorman of Reno, Nev., Michael O’Gorman of Hays, Kansas, Linda O’Gorman-Kelly of Riegelwood, Kathleen O-Gorman-Rhodebeck of Penacook, N.H., and her twin, Maureen O’Gorman of Hallsboro.

 

LOUISE FAULKNER

BLADENBORO – Louise Faulkner, 86, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a homemaker.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at First Missionary Baptist Church in Abbottsburg by the Rev. Leonard Royal. Burial followed in the Sandhill Cemetery in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include five daughters, Barbara Faulkner and Carolyn F. Jones, both of Bladenboro, Hazel Faulkner of East Arcadia, Linda Brunson of Lorton, Va., and Margaret Faulkner of Englewood, N.J.; two sons, Terry Faulkner of Bladenboro, and Alfred Faulkner of Elizabethtown.

 

MONNIE MOREE LANGLEY

BLADENBORO – Monnie Moree Langley, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at UNC Chapel Hill.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Oct. 11 at New Center Baptist Church with the Reverends Mickey Moree and Bruce Cannon officiating. Burial followed at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Rev. George Langley of the home; two sons, William Langley of Holden Beach, and Michael Langley of Charlotte; a daughter, Georgia L. Moore of Lumberton; four grandsons and four great-grandsons.

 

ERIC FLOYD TOOMER

WHITEVILLE – Eric Floyd Toomer, 45, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a railroad worker.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville by Prophetess Sneed. Burial will follow in the Sandhill Cemetery in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Daphine M. Toomer; three daughters, Shameika Monroe of the home, Sherica Brady of Statesville, and Quasheta Underwood of Chadbourn; three brothers, Eric Williams of Lawton, Okla., Stacy Freeman and Equa Underwood, both of Chadbourn; his parents, Roosevelt and Frances Toomer of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Deborah Toomer and Anita Toomer of Baltimore, Md.

Viewing will be held at the funeral home Thursday, Oct. 12 from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

 

BETTY BOWMAN WELBORNE

WHITEVILLE – Betty Bowman Welborne, 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

Welborne was a retired bookkeeper with area radio stations, and the Red Cross Blood Services Director for Columbus County. She served as Columbus County Red Cross Chairman and was a participating founder of the Columbus County Theatre Association and past president of the Columbus County Arts Council.

She is survived by her husband, Curt Welborne of the home; and a daughter, Lucia Gambill of Utah.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

 

ROBERT JOSEPH MATHIS

DELCO -- Robert Joseph ‘Josh’ Mathis, 54, of Delco, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 1, 1952 in Jacksonville, a son of Stella Ingram Mathis, of Leland, and the late Robert Mathis Jr.

Mathis retired from International Paper after 26 years of service and was an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 24 years, Teresa Mathis; five children, Dawn Brandon of Layton, Utah, Shelley Brawley of Orange, Texas, Matthew Craven of Delco, Mark Craven of Wilmington, and Jennifer Johnson, of Orange, Texas; two sisters, Judy Poole, and Debbie Mathis, both of Wilmington; three brothers, James Mathis of Wilmington, Tony Mathis of Leland, and Peter Levitsky of Riverside, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Prosper Baptist Church in Delco with the Reverends Leroy Evans Jr. and Eddie Watts officiating. Interment followed in Prosper Cemetery. Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel, Wilmington handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in memory of Mathis, to the family to assist with medical expenses, in care of Teresa Mathis, 1586 Old Fayetteville Rd, Leland, N.C. 28451.

 

VIVIAN H. SMITH

LAKE WACCAMAW – Vivian H. Smith, 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Davis Healthcare Center in Wilmington. She was a nurse’s aide.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Little Wheel of Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. James Fullwood officiating. Burial will follow in the Cutler Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Marie H. Eason and Deloris Rhodes, both of Wilmington, Anita H. Hicks of Los Angeles, Calif., and Vivian H. Ajaye of Chatswroth, Calif.; two sons, Ervin Hassell of Bellevue, Wash. and William “Bill” Hassell of the home; two stepdaughters, Leathia Mae Point and Juanita Jacobs; four stepsons, Alexandria Smith, Cliff Smith, Joseph Willie Smith, and Roy Smith; a brother, Haywood Powell of San Rafael, Va.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday, Oct. 13 from noon until 8 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 10-11 a.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

There will be a wake Friday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

WHITEVILLE – Joseph Bullock, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

ANTHONY DWAYNE DRAYTON

WHITEVILLE – Anthony Dwayne Drayton, 38, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of Mary Drayton and Matthew Drayton.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Brunswick-Waccamaw Missionary Baptist Association building at 600 Pine Log Road, Whiteville with Pastor Vickie Drayton and Prophet Morris Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Welches Creek Cemetery in Whiteville. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors other than his parents are his wife, Pastor Vickie M. Drayton; nine children, Bryan Munn, Brittany Munn, Brandi Drayton, Jasmine Freeman, Shawnesha McKinnies, Carletha Mc-Kinnies, Khadijah McKinnies, Rasheen McKinnies, and Lamont Powell; two brothers, Otis Drayton, and Johnny Drayton; three sisters, Tiffany C. Kemp, Renee Mullins, and Tamika Drayton.

Viewing will be held from 1-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 at Justified By Faith O.A.A. Ministries, 402 S. Maultsby St., Whiteville.

Family will receive friends at 217 N. Madison St., Whiteville.

 

SALLIE LOU McCATHERN ENZOR

NICHOLS, S.C. -- Sallie Lou McCathern Enzor, 94 of the Spring Branch community passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born April 23, 1912 in Lee County S.C., the daughter of John Franklin and Ada Wenifred Stevens McCathern.

She was predeceased by her husband, W. Roscoe Enzor; a son, Charlie R. Caughman; a granddaughter, Sybil R. Buffkin; a great-great-grandson, D.J. Graves; five brothers and sisters, and 10 stepbrothers and sisters.

Enzor was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church for 72 years, where she was active in the choir, WMU, Vacation Bible School and served as a Sunday school teacher. She was also active in the Eastern Star for more than 60 years.

She was a loving and devoted wife, grandmother, great-grand-mother and great-great-grandmother. She was a friend to all and her beautiful smile and warm loving personality will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday Oct. 13, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Walt Cooper and Dr. Floyd Enzor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her daughters, Addie Jo Strickland of Conway, S.C., Janet C. Rawls of Lumberton; a daughter-in-law, Elise H. Caughman of Nichols, S.C.; a sister, Floride Huggins of Charlotte; nine grandchildren, Steve W. Strickland of the home, Teresa and Jessica Jones, William C. Strickland, Debra R. Blackburn, Karen R. Williams, James E. Rawls, Greg Rawls, and Bernie Rawls; 11 great-grandchildren, 13 great- great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday Oct. 12, at the funeral home and also for one hour prior to the service at the church.

AUTHUR LEVON McALISTER

FRANKFORD, Pa. – Arthur Levon McAlister, 56, formerly of Chadbourn, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Frankford Hospital there. He was born Dec. 27, 1949 in Columbus County the son of Authur McAlister and Hortense Nance McAlister. He was a retired register nurse.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Mill Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Pastor Anthony Gause officiating. Burial will follow in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. S&L and Goodwill Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Hortense Nance McAlister of Chadbourn; daughters, Deirdra McAlister of Bladenboro, Kimyetta McAlister of Durham, and Dennea McAlister of Coateville, Pa.; brothers, Larry McAlister, Andre McAlister, and Stephon McAlister, all of Chadbourn; sisters, Gloria McAlister Williams of Leland, and Cassandra Ann Wooten of Philadelphia, Pa. and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13 at the funeral home, 917 Pine Long Road.

 

ALBERT M. SMITH

CLARKTON – Albert M. Smith, 28, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at New Hanover Health Network, Wilmington.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Whites Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverends Gordon Griffin and Ollie Maultsby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Pandoria Smith, a son, Alfred Smith Jr., and his mother, Mary Shaw.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, from 2-5 p.m., a wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. and Friday 9-11 a.m.

 

JOSEPH PHILLIP GRAHAM

RIEGELWOOD – Joseph Phillip Graham Sr., 55, of the East Arcadia community, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 at Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Clarida officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Alicia Graham of Riegelwood; a son, Joseph Phillip Graham Jr. of Riegelwood; two brothers, Alfonzo Graham of Elmont, N.Y. and Chester Hayes of Riegelwood; and a sister, Georgiana Graham Ramsey of Newark, N.J.

There will be a wake on Thursday at noon at the church, and final viewing will follow the service.

 

RICHIE LARRIMORE

CHADBOURN -- Richie Larrimore of Chadbourn died Thursday morning at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.
