LUMBERTON -- Prentice Marvin Hayes, 67, of 210 E. Wardell Drive, died Jan. 3, 2006, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. During his declining health he was a patient at Shoreland, Liberty Commons, Century Care, and Premier Living in Columbus County.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Floyd Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Clyde Hammonds officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Baker and Debra Jean Bodiford, both of Lumberton; and two grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Magellan Williams, 63, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. He was a mechanic.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 8 at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the services.

Williams; two daughters, Kenya Morman of the home and Regina Arnette of Queens, N.Y.; four sons, Magellan Antonio Williams and Gregory Williams of the home, Jamaal Soles of the home, and Tommy McKoy of New York; six sisters, Hazel Sherod and Dora Griffith of Baltimore, Md., Mae Singleton and Emma Jean Estes of Philadelphia, Pa., Verna Mae Greene of Hollis, N.Y., and Isadora McKoy of Kernersville; four brothers, Pinkley Williams, Percy Williams, and Cleveland Williams, all of Whiteville; and Shelton Williams of Newark, N.J.
WHITEVILLE Ruth Lambert Stanley, 89, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006. She was born July 8, 1916 in Columbus County the daughter of the late Andrew and Rebecca Ward Lambert. She was the widow of Thomas Stanley.
She was formerly employed with Columbus County in the 1950’s under former Sheriff Pridgen as custodian with the Columbus County Jail System. She was a member of Mill Branch Primative Baptist Church.
Graveside service was conducted on Sunday, Jan. 8 at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park by the Reverends Billy Gore and George Paul Jr. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Edwin Lambert Stanley of Whiteville; a sister, Margie Wood of Fayetteville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hardmon Lambert and Woodrow Lambert, and a sister, Thara Melvin.
TABOR CITY Alice Faye Hilburn, 64, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at her residence. She was born in Dillon, S.C., the daughter of the late Hugh Wilson Dew and Martha Lorine Rogers Dew.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Reverends Dale Manning and Hoyt King. Burial followed in the Oak Dale Cemetery in Loris, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Dale Hilburn Sr. of the home; a son, Gary Dale Hilburn Jr. of Tabor City; six brothers, Jimmy Lee Dew and Brian Franklin Dew, both of Roxboro, Roy Webb Dew and Johnny Dew, both of Loris, S.C., John Douglas Dew and Donnie Ray Dew, both of Tabor City; and two grandsons.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the Brunswick Waccamaw Baptist Association Building in Whiteville by Bishop Richard K. Thompson. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park.

RIEGELWOOD James Salter, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was a fast food restaurant manager.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13 at Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church by the Rev. Donald Mapson. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Park in Wilmington. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

WHITEVILLE Margaret Jacobs Squires, 79, formerly of Fairless Hills, Pa. died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born Feb. 27, 1926 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Samuel Barcie Jacobs and Lola Mae Soles Jacobs. She was the widow of Francis Eugene Squires.
She is survived by three sisters, Frances Jacobs Diggers of Charlotte, Peggy Jacobs Butler of Conway, S.C., and Betty Jacobs Rich of Whiteville.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Wayne Squires and Anthony Jerome Squires; and a brother, Bobby Glendale Jacobs.
Visitation will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines in Whiteville. Burial will be in Mechanicsville, Pa.
WHITEVILLE A.G. Goins, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 at Shoreland Healthcare and Rehabilitation.
He was the husband of the late, Veatus Stephens Goins and
the son of the late Alex and Mattie Smith Goins.
He retired in 1983 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Soil Conservation) after 30 years of service. He was also a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 at Smyrna Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Ted Riedel officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by a daughter, Joy Renee Goins of Whiteville; a son, Aaron M. “Birdie” Goins of Ocean Isle Beach; three sisters, Eileen Gore of Whiteville, Iris Stephens of Elizabethtown, and Maxine Jordan of Whiteville; and two step-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Latha Williams Smith, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 at the Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Williams and Amanda Stanley Williams.
She was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, member of the W.M.U. and served as associational director of the W.M.U. for many years, directed the Christmas play for children, sang in the church choir and served as church clerk. She also served as a caregiver for many families during her working years.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with Dr. Dave Heller and the Rev. Rick Astle officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Andrews of Galax, Va.; a son, Gayle (Tiny) Smith of Ocalla, Fla.; and two brothers, Dan Williams of Riegelwood, and Harvey Williams of Whiteville.
Visitation will be Monday night from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
TABOR CITY Bishop Willie Clayton Chestnut died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late James Williams Chestnut and Dessie Bellamy Chestnut.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Mt. Olive Holiness Church in Tabor City with Dr. D.N. Patterson conducting the eulogy. Dr. Dennis E. Chestnut is pastor. Burial will follow in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery in Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Lela Thompson Chesnut; a son, Westley Chestnut of Morro, Ga.; two step-daughters, Kimberly Thompson of Fairmont, and Tonya McCray of Rocky Mount; two brothers, Walter J. Chestnut and Hubert Chestnut, both of Detroit, Mich; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors and friends at the home of the late Bishop Willie Clayton Chestnut. There will be no public viewing at the funeral home nor at the church. Only immediate family will be allowed to view at the funeral home.
