WILLIAM ‘BUDDY’ BLACK
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. William Donald “Buddy” Black, 67, of North Myrtle Beach, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at his home.
Born on April 18, 1938 in Whiteville, he was the son of the late William Crowell and Maude Butler Black.
Mr. Black began his career with Black’s Tire Service, Whiteville, in the late 1950s under the guidance of his father, W. Crowell Black. He purchased Black’s Tire in 1971 and successfully expanded its operations until selling it in 1996. In partnership with his father he developed International Tire Marketers, Inc. and purchased the company in 1976 representing companies such as Kelly Springfield, Goodyear, Cooper, Dunlop and Ohtsu Tire in the USA, Central and South America, India, Poland and Ecuador. In addition, he was one of the founding members of Tire Brands, Inc., which developed the private brands of Sonic and Saxon tires. His peers at Tire Brands, Inc. knew him as “Gentleman Buddy Black.” In 1985 he purchased Whiteville Oil Co. Inc. from his family and achieved dominant position in the marketplace early. With over 75 years of associations with now BP Amoco, the third generation Mr. Black developed more than 15 locations and a L.P. gas division that he sold to Campbell Oil and Gas and later sold Whiteville Oil’s convenience stores, “Sam’s Pit Stop” to his son, W. Samuel Black.
He enjoyed vacations with his grandchildren, boating and traveling in his camper with his wife.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 29 years, Anita “Mandy” Black of the home; a son, William Samuel “Sammy” Black of Lake Waccamaw; a daughter, Charlotte B. Patterson (John) of Shawnee, OK., two sisters, Greta B. Mitchell (Tom) of New Bern, and Betty B. Sizemore (Brad) of Raleigh; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rodney and Vivian Mandracchia of Matthews; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan and Charles “Redd” Osbourne of Weddington; six grandchildren, Devon and Travis Williams of Houston, Texas, Paige Patterson of Norman, OK., Patrick Williamson and Learin Patterson of Shawnee, OK., Chandler Black of Paden; and nieces and nephews, Mindy and George Webster of Atlanta, GA., Allison Mitchell of New Bern, Leigh and John Sizemore of Raleigh, Kelley and Dave Wilber of Rock Hill, S.C. and Megan Mandracchia of Boone.
Pallbearers will be W. Samuel “Sammy” Black, Ricky Benton, Rodney Mandracchia, Charles “Redd” Osbourne, T. Alec Black and Lloyd “Pebo” Collier.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Lee Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday at Lee Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow at Southeastern Memorial Gardens. Rev. Danny Chamblee will officiate.

BOLTON Judith Ilene Brown, 51, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She worked at Dupont.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 4 at Townsend Temple First Born Church by Pastor Lula Mae Webb. Burial followed in Townsend Temple Memorial Gardens. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Senous “Billy” Brown; two sons, Michael Kunf of Pasquotank and Shawndel Brown of Bolton.
TABOR CITY Alice Faye Hilburn, 64, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at her residence. She was born in Dillon, S.C., the daughter of the late Hugh Wilson Dew and Martha Lorine Rogers Dew.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the Inman Chapel, the Reverends Dale Manning and Hoyt King officiated. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Loris, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Dale Hilburn Sr. of the home; a son, Gary Dale Hilburn Jr. of Tabor city; six brothers, Jimmy Lee Dew and Brian Franklin Dew, both of Roxboro, Roy Webb Dew and Johnny Dew, both of Loris, S.C., John Douglas Dew and Donnie Ray Dew, both of Tabor City; and two grandsons, Troy Lance Hilburn and Dylan Cole Hilburn.
JACKSONVILLE Geneva Beck Todd, 88, formerly of Columbus County, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at Onslow Memorial Hospital. Her son, M.C. Todd and daughter, Martha Todd preceded her in death.
Final rites were held on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at United Pentecostal Church on Piney Green Road. The Reverends Arden Bustard and James Gilbert officiated. Burial followed in Onslow Memorial Park. Jones Funeral Home of Jacksonville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Todd and Bill Todd and his wife, Joanne, all of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Bettie Bacol of Rockfish, Lynda Morton and her husband, Wayne and Merry Pierson and her husband, Steve, all of Jacksonville; a brother, Fred Beck of St. Pauls; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. John Rogers, 54, formerly of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Second Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in the Bladen Memorial Gardens in Elizabethtown. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Eddie Rogers; three daughters, Secily Dewberry, Nicole Sarpong, and Qwanda Rogers, all of Springfield, Mass.; two sisters, Patricia Whitted of Worcester, Mass. and Lillian Bryant of Elizabethtown; and six grandchildren.
Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service. The family will receive friends Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Bryant, 1209 Peanut Plant Road Elizabethtown.

WHITEVILLE Josephine L. George, 72, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a homehealth aide.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Algernon McKenzie. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, James H. George; two daughters, Amanda Stafford of Hillside, N.J. and Kemaa George of Greensboro; a son, Starr George of Durham; two sisters, Maevern McKenzie and Louvenia McDonald, both of Whiteville; a brother, Clifton Best of Terrill, Texas.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from 12 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday following the service.
WHITEVILLE Vera Worley Norris, 89, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006. She was born Dec. 29, 1916 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late William Augustus and Julia Duncan Worley.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cribbtown Freewill Holiness Church in Clarendon.
Final rites were held Thursday, Jan. 5 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Roy Walker and Morris Worley. Burial followed in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Paul Norris of Whiteville and Brooks Norris of Lake Waccamaw; two daughters, Pearl Thompson of Whiteville and Reba Brown of Florence, S.C.; three sisters, Margie Hinson, Doris Hinson, and Retha Cartrette, all of Chadbourn; a brother, Horace Worley of Chadbourn; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Claridy Cartrette Worley; five brothers, twin-brother, Robert, Troy, Roy, Claude and Cleon Worley; and two sisters, Sadie Worley and Maude W. Cartrette.
DOROTHY DAVIS SPIVEY

WHITEVILLE Dorothy Davis Spivey 86, died on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Born on June 10, 1919, she was the daughter of the late J.W. Davis Sr. and Mabel Osborne Davis of Chadbourn. A Columbus County native, she was raised on a farm near Chadbourn, graduated from Chadbourn High School, and earned a degree in business administration from Mars Hill College.
Mrs. Spivey served the farmers of Columbus County for more than 40 years, beginning in the Agricultural Assistance Administration (AAA)and retiring as Executive Director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) in 1978. She was the first and only woman to lead that agency. During her tenure the agency received awards for outstanding service to farmers on three occasions.
Mrs. Spivey was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Whiteville. She was active in Sunday school and the Presbyterian Women and received the Honorary Life Membership Award for Presbyterian Women. She was a charter member of the Columbus County Business and Professional Women’s Club of Whiteville and a charter member of the Evening Garden Club. She was the founding secretary-treasurer of the North Carolina Association of ASCS Employees and served in that capacity for four consecutive years.
She was married to Liston Douglas Spivey for 54 years before his death in 2001. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining her large extended family, playing bridge, reading, and many long and happy friendships.
Dorothy Spivey is preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers Robert Davis, Bill Davis and Jim Davis.
She is survived by her son, Douglas Spivey of Whiteville; her daughter, Ellen Spivey Harrison and son-in-law Wade Harrison of Burlington; grandchildren, Evan Harrison and wife Emily of Frankfort, KY. and Allison Harrison of Chapel Hill; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Frances Spivey of Whiteville; her sister-in-law, Marvaneen Davis of Chadbourn as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 at the First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville by Dr. Mills Peebles. Interment will be in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements for the family.

CLARENDON Melvin Junior McPherson, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Melvin and Blanche Fipps McPherson.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin with interment in the McPherson Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by three daughters, Saundra Todd and Brenda Spivey, both of Clarendon, and Barbara Long of Sunset Beach; a sister, Myrtie Williams of Chadbourn; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday night from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

LEXINGTON Dennis O’Neill Walker, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at Centerclair Nursing Home after declining health of seven months. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Reaves Walker.
Walker was born April 25, 1931 in Columbus County to Frank G. Walker and Vernie Coleman Walker. He was a retired exterminator from A-1 Pest Control.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at Peacock Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville with burial to follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Whiteville. Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington, along with Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by a son, Cecil Walker of Lexington; a daughter, Paula Hurd and husband Lawerence of Lexington; four grandchildren, Zachary Walker, Kailey Walker, Michael Hurd, and Chris Hurd; a brother, Richard Walker of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters, Margaret Huffman of Chadbourn, Ruby Thompson of Whiteville, and Mabelene Carter of Castle Hayne.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel and locally at other times at 514 Creekwood Drive, Lexington. There will also be a visitation prior to the service from noon until 2 p.m. Friday at Peacock Funeral Home in Whiteville and at other times at the home of Ruby Thompson in Whiteville.

ARLINGTON, Va. Kellam Reeves Lagather, 80, formerly of Columbus County died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at her residence.
She was the daughter of the late Charlie Barnella and Tallulah Williams Reeves and the widow of Robert B. Lagather. She was a retired secretary.

She is survived by a sister, Ann R. Worthington of Whiteville.

BOLTON Rodney “Roho” Jacobs, 61, of the Buckhead community died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Doc Owen and Evelyn Freeman Jacobs.
