OBITUARIES

BOBBY WALTERS JR.

CLARKTON – Bobby “Thumper” Walters Jr., 48, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006 at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation, Elizabethtown.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 5 at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Green officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Doris Ferguson Walters; his father, Bobby Walters Sr. and stepmother, Lois; a son, Caleb Walters of Chadbourn; a daughter, Candy Lee Walters of California; three brothers, Danny Walters of Clarkton, Timmy Walters of California, and Terry Colove of Missouri; four sisters, Kathy Johnson of Bladenboro, Joy Faith of Dublin, Darla Gomez and Sno Sneeddon, both of California.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Advantage Hospice & Homecare, P.O. Box 1960, Elizabethtown, N.C. 28337.

 

BLANCO SIMMONS

ASH – Blanco Simmons, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006. Born in Bladen County on Aug. 28, 1923, he was a son of the late George Conley and Lunda Milliken Simmons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lucas Marie Simmons and a great-great-granddaughter.

Simmons was a member of the Waccamaw Fire Department, longtime member of New Britton Baptist Church, and retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation in 1985.

Final rites were held Friday, Aug. 4 at New Britton Baptist Church with the Reverends Larry Milliken and Sterlin Sarvis officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home of Supply handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Marie Simmons of Old Dock; two sons, Richard Dwight Simmons of Boiling Springs Lakes, and Timothy Blanco Simmons of the home; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two brothers, Roland D. “Bay” Simmons, and Rudolph Simmons; and two sisters, Lula King and Ella Milliken.

 

NOLON MOORE

CERRO GORDO – Nolon Moore, 66, formerly of Fair Bluff, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff.

The family will receive friends at the home of Gussie L. Moore, 2420 Otto Nance Road, Cerro Gordo.

 

DAVID JOE PLATT

GREEN SEA, S.C. – David Joe Platt, 68, died at his home on Monday, July 31, 2006.

Final rites were held Sunday, Aug. 6 at S&L Funeral Home Chapel with Apostle Victor Hill officiating. Burial followed at Butler Branch Community Cemetery, Fair Bluff. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Faye S. Platt of the home; two daughters, Sylvia Ann Platt of Hampton, Va., and Suzanna Stackhouse of Conway, S.C.; six sons, Joe Davis Platt of Hampton, Va., McZenzie Corey Platt and Raleigh Stackhouse, both of Conway, S.C., Frank Allen McGill of Myrtle Beach, S.C., James “Little Buddy” Stackhouse of Green Sea, S.C., and Ronnie Grady of Chadbourn; his mother, Annie Lee Platt of Marion, S.C.; a sister, Mary W. Evans of Lawrenceville, Ga., a brother, Johnnie James Platt of Marion, S.C.; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

 

TERESA WARD

CLARENDON – Teresa Ward, 46, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006 at her residence. She was born in Guilford County, the daughter of Thurman Norris and the late Frances Christine Watts Norris.

Final rites were held Sunday, Aug. 6 at Inman Chapel with interment following in the Bethel Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Randy Ward of the home; two sons, Nathaniel Ward of the home, and Jason Ward of Whiteville; a daughter, Angie Batten of Chadbourn; her father, Thurman Norris of Whiteville; two sisters, Wanda Naron of Whiteville, and Linda Norris of Ash; two brothers, Donnie Norris of Whiteville, and Jack Norris of Ash; and three grandchildren.

 

VERNON T. SCIPIO

BALTIMORE, Md. – Vernon Tyrone Scipio, 49, formerly of Chadbourn, died Sunday, July 30, 2006 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Final rites were held Saturday, Aug. 5 at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville. Burial followed in the Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Jamila Willie of Baltimore, Md.; his mother, Yvonnie Faison Scipio of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Lydia Faison and Kenyetta Scipio, both of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Darien Scipio and Kendrick Scipio, both of Baltimore, Md.

 

EMERY POWELL

HALLSBORO – Emery Powell, 82, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug, 8 at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church by Supt. Thomas A. Wiggins. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Angela Woodard of Upper Marlboro, Md.; four sons, Dr. Melvin E. Powell, Charles H. Powell, Michael G. Powell, and Terry T. Powell, all of Hallsboro; five sisters, Elizabeth Ray of Virginia Beach, Va., Helen Hill and Shirley McHaney, both of Newark, N.J., Mary K. Allen of Bloomfield, N.J., and Hattie M. Boone of Decatur, Ga.; and a brother, James E. Boone of Lake Waccamaw.

Viewing will be at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. today (8-7).  Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time for the service. There will be no viewing after the service. The family will receive friends today (8-7) at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Melvin Powell, 3285 Red Bug Road, Hallsboro.

 

HEATH C. REAVES

GREEN SEA, S.C. – Heath C. Reaves, 33, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital, Loris, S.C.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City.

 

CHARLIE L. GOODMAN

FAIR BLUFF – Charlie L. Goodman, 54, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville.

Final rites will be held Monday, Aug. 7 at 3:30 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Reverends Ervin Harper and Mary Edge officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Linda P. Goodman of the home, four daughters, Tonya Owens, Robin Goodman and Felicia Goodman, all of Mullins, S.C.; Priesley Ann Loy of Belgium; four sons, Kochise Grate of Fayetteville, Cedric Porcha of the home; Herman Durham of Andrews, S.C., and Thurman Durham of Hawaii; his mother, Mother Mary Stene Goodman and father, James Goodman, both of Fair Bluff; three sisters, Shirley Blair of Philadelphia, Pa.; Teresa Goodman of Fair Bluff, and Connie Evans of Chadbourn; three brothers, Huddie Goodman of Hartsford, Conn., Victor Goodman of Chase City, Va., and Al James Goodman of Fair Bluff; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

 

WILLIE E. BURNEY

WHITE OAK – Willie Edwards Burney, 82, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006 at her home. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 at White Oak Church of God of prophecy with Mackie Walters, Leon Warren, and Randy Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in White Oak Church of God Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, John “June” Burney; two daughters, Wanda Herring and Willie Jean Teel; a brother, M.D. Edwards of Bladenboro; and a sister, LaRue Lancaster of Bladenboro; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight (8-7) at the funeral home.

 

MOTHER MARY SMITH MARLEY

WHITEVILLE – Mother Mary Smith Marley, 68, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9 at Living Word Church in Chadbourn with Pastor Robert Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Campground Cemetery, Whiteville. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four children, Priscilla Marley of Norfolk, Va., Gwendolyn Gaskins of Clarkton, Keith Austin of Charleston, S.C., and Raymond Marley of Whiteville; a brother, Deacon Clifton Smith of Whiteville; seven sisters, Hanna Monroe, Larcene Brown, Evelyn Perkins, Josephine Brown, and Lorena Hope, all of Whiteville, Alice Ruth Richardson of Hillside, N.J., and Peggy Corrothers of Chadbourn; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be on Tuesday, Aug. 8 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 1 p.m. until time of the service at Living Word Church in Chadbourn.

 

ERMA H. SHARPE

EFLAND – Erma Hawkins Sharpe, 92, formerly of Hurdle Mills, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006 at her home. She was born in Person County to the late Walter Hawkins and Barsha  Bradsher Hawkins. She was the widow of Clarence Sharpe Sr.

Sharpe was a member of Mt. Adar Baptist Church in Mebane. She was a retired school cafeteria cook and was known for being an excellent seamstress and for the fruit cakes she made and sold at Christmas.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 at Mt. Adar Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Silver officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Brooks & White Funeral Home Inc. of Roxboro is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Clarence “Sonny” Sharpe Jr. of Lake Waccamaw; Wilbur Ray Sharpe of Virginia Beach, Va., and Donald Anthony Sharpe of Whiteville; two daughters, Gayle S. Meadows and Becki Sharpe, both of Efland; a brother, Dean Hawkins of Hurdle Mills; two sisters, Alice Clayton of Roxboro, and Inez Rogers of Timberlake; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. tonight (8-7) at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 7819 High Rock Road, Efland.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Adar Baptist Church, 7503 N.C. Hwy. 49, Mebane, N.C. 27302.
