The Spend Money in Columbus campaign kicked off Saturday -- a campaign that hopes to persuade local residents to buy or eat out locally whenever possible. The campaign is sponsored the chambers of commerce in Whiteville, Chadbourn, Fair Bluff and Tabor City.
New shopping opportunities and better highways makes it easy and expedient to travel to destinations like Myrtle Beach and Wilmington.
However, money that leaves home only helps these already booming economies, which dwarf that of Columbus County.
There are also financial incentives to win. People may register in the approximately 100 stores participating forthree shopping sprees worth $1,250.
Many people will travel to other shopping destinations for good reason, but your local businesses and businessmen who support civic efforts and pay many of the taxes that run our schools and government only ask that during April, when possible, give them a shot to earn your business.
Keeping as many dollars in the local economy as possible is smart and makes us all a little better off.
