New information also surfaced this week that Dion Brown fired several shots at two deputies from a range of less than 10 feet. Full bottom armor probably saved the life of a deputy and SWAT team member Justin Hern, who was hit in the lower abdomen area that was covered by the extended body armor. Had he been wearing a typical bullet-proof vest, the shot likely would have penetrated his body. The deputies shot and killed Brown.

The cause of death of Eugene T. McQueen, 55, of Tabor City, is still unknown. McQueen’s body was found in a house fire early Tuesday. Police believe Brown killed McQueen, set the house on fire, and fled.
