Cardboard boat race enthusiasts throughout the state of North Carolina will be competing for a state championship in their sport of racing watercraft out of seemingly non-seaworthy materials. The North Carolina Cardboard Boat Championships sponsored by Plimsoll Gear will be held Father’s Day weekend on Saturday, June 14 at the Waccamaw Sailing Club in Lake Waccamaw.
The schedule of events begins with last-minute boat building at 9 a m, team registration and check-in at 11 a.m., boat judging at 11:30 a.m., races at noon followed by the post-race awards ceremony.
This will be the third year that The Rotary Club of Whiteville, N.C. has held the event which is expected to draw a crowd of more than 400 spectators and over 20 boat entries made almost entirely out of cardboard.
“Last year we had teams enter from as far away as Winston-Salem”, said Jonathan Medford, event organizer from the Whiteville Rotary Club. “We hope that this event continues to grow into a North Carolina Father’s Day weekend tradition.”
The race challenge is to design and build a human-powered, corrugated cardboard boat that’s capable of finishing around a 200-yard course.
The boats are limited only by the builders’ imaginations. Last year’s entries included a pirate ship, “The Waccamaw Whale,” “Duck Dynasty” air boat, the 18-foot “Smoke on the Water” and fast kayak designs built for speed.
State Championship categories include Kids Fun Paddle, Single Paddler Junior (ages 12-17), Multi-Paddler Junior, Single Paddler Adult, Multi-Paddler Adult and a last boat standing Free-For-All Match.
Awards are given for Most Original Design, Best Construction, Team Spirit, Shortest Boat, Longest Boat, People’s Choice and the crowd favorite: “Titanic Award for the Most Spectacular Sinking”.
A concession stand will be on site to sell food and drink at a nominal fee. Attendees are encouraged to car pool and to bring their own chairs.
Family, youth group and individual boat entries are $30, club and non-profit organization entries are $50 and corporate team entries are $100. Discounts are available to those who pre-register on the event website at www.sinkswimorwin.com.
The event is sponsored by Plimsoll Gear. All proceeds for the event will go to the Whiteville Rotary Club’s Good Works Fund which supports many local charities, non-profits and scholarships throughout Columbus County.
