WHITEVILLE — Bonnie Smith Ensley, 86, died Monday, April 21, 2014 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Augustus B. Smith and Gladys Patrick Smith and was preceded in death by one sister; Kathryn Smith Curry of St. Simons, Ga.; three brothers, Augustus B. Smith Jr. and Richard L. Smith, both of Wilmington and Patrick W. Smith of St. Petersburg, Va. She was born in Henderson and moved to Wilmington at the age of three. She attended Flora MacDonald College. Bonnie and her husband Gene met in Wilmington and were married for 63 years. Gene received his doctorate from the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. They served churches in Hopewell, Va., Dunn, Greensboro and Clearwater, Fla., which was his longest pastorate. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joshua Bower officiating. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Eugene C. Ensley of Whiteville; two daughters, Jennifer Ensley Meekins of Whiteville and Martha T. Ensley of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one grandaughter, Kathryn C. Meekins of Whiteville; one niece, Judy Curry of St. Simons, Ga; and one nephew, Ernie Curry of St. Simons, Ga.
